Visitor visa for mother/mother-in-law

Has anyone been successful in bringing their mother/ mother in law from nigeria to visit. My mother-in-law wants to come visit and see her grandson. I know approval rate for visitor's visa is pretty low so i am hoping for some suggestions on any who may have gone through the process as to how the interview went and the application process went.

My parents did not go through Nigeria but I think the process is the same for all countries. Basically your mother-in-law needs to provide ties to Nigeria (home, business, employment, family, bank account) etc.

I also sent them an invitation letter (why I wanted them to come, I would be taking care of them, etc etc).

No personal experience but it is going to be difficult (very) to obtain visitor visas from that part of the world. The presumption is that the person(s) is intending to immigrate and it is up to the individual(s) to show proof otherwise.

(Essentially this is true for all non-VWP countries - but Nigeria is one that is particularly difficult.)

Its very unlikely that your mother-in-law will be granted a visa. Although there is not harm in trying. It will probably be easier for your son to visit her.

It actually depends on how old she is, the embassy in lagos is partial to elderly people especially if they are going for a visit for the first time. It's when they violate the first visit by overstaying that they are denied. I don't think your mother or mother in law will be denied a visa except if they have violated that rule in the past. As I earlier stated, the American embassy in lagos are very partial to elderly people if all their paperwork are in order. I have witnessed this first hand and have testimonies too. So i will advice get all their paperwork ready from your end and from theirs too and get ready to welcome them when either one of them gets here. You might be surprised they will be given multiple entry visas. It has been done!!!!

Has your mother in-law travelled outside the country before and returned without overstaying her visa? If she has travelled outside the country prior to this visit, she has a good chance of getting a visa.

Most Western embassies are quite biased towards Nigerians who have never travelled outside the country and hence the diffiuclty in obtaining a visa.

It is possible out of the 6 nigerian citizens I invited to my wedding 4 were approved 1 did not keep appointment at embassy and 1 was denied. They all showed strong ties to the country (meaning job or land) and I also filled out I-864 support documents for all (knowing it was not required). So be prepared tp fully except responsibility in every way and make sure she / they have strong ties and a valid reason for visiting and clearly identified plan / rational to return home..
