Nope you don't. My husband was in the same situation except his SSN was lost in the mail blab blab blah so we didn't actually have it when he moved here :) The SSN office was very nice about re-issuing the card

What if you have a social security card, but it has restrictions on it? I was an F1 student in the US and I worked legally, so my SSN is for work only. Do I just need to go in to have that restriction removed and then change my name?

Means nothing. ALL social security cards have "restrictions' The SS card, even for citizens, is NOT a work authorization. It is not valid ID. Even citizens have to show a passport or birth certificate to work. The card itself is a worthless piece of paper you can put in the bottom of your sock drawer. The only thing important is the number. I LOST my card in 1973, haven't needed it since.

If it really bothers you, after you get your EAD or GC you can go back to the SS office and get a new card.

i think you mean the restriction where it reads you are not authorized to work...

you definately get a new card, without the restriction noted on there.

and definately the card does not matter, but the restrictions follows the number so if you are not authorized to work and you go for an interview and state you are authorized to work, that would be breaking the law.

so keep in mind...
