Yep, it's a no-no. Specially considering her degree and experience. This guy is either a complete fvcktard, or he is an absentminded one. Either, is not good.

...he's a she and she's Czech, but has lived here more than 30 years.

Here's from just one of the ads right now on Craigslist:

"Minimum one year dental experience is required for these positions.

We offer $12-18/hr for these positions depending on experience and job performance plus incentive bonus and dental benefit. "

Depends on how difficult it is for your wife to find a job even if she's overqualified for the position in question. If it's the only position offered in dentistry, she should go for it and bargain for a higher wage after a short probationary period.

If there's plenty of other comparable positions take a hike.

The ad clearly states $12-18/hr. I believe she should point this out to the CHOP and see what her repsonse is.

I'm looking at Craigslist now and I'm seeing at least 20 job offers for assistants within our area.

That's from some ad I found as an example of the going rate. I can't remember the dentist's name and I can't find the listing.

I find myself agreeing with alien on this. (How can this be?? I guess if we talk about something other than politics for once, cooler heads prevail  )

If she's trying to break into the labor market here with no local experience, and in a tough economy, it may be worthwhile to spend a month at a lower payrate just to get her foot in the door. If she's really good then her negotiating stance becomes much stronger. She can then approach the dentist and tell her that the salary is unacceptable and give her proposed rate. Much likelier to get traction in the negotiation once the boss has been suitably impressed with the value she brings to the office.

On the other hand, if you are confident she can do much better right away, don't even waste time here, just move on to a better opportunity.

As to CL - be careful, there's a lot of bogus stuff. Merely counting ads is no indication of how deep the demand truly is.

Rooster, if I understood right the $12-18 was from another sample ad Steve found. It's not the one for the office Jinky is working at.

is that 50 dollars a day for 8 hours? that is actually not that bad... most babysitters/nannies charge a lot more... I get paid about 55 bucks for about 6 hours

Oh I know, Marilyn. We already figured that there wouldn't be much left from her pay after childcare. I really don't know how families with two working parents manage these days, especially if one spouse is barely making above minimum wage.

brother stevie..i know sister jinky is not use to the usa job market, which can be at times can be aggressive..she needs to ask about benefits..and pay before she starts working..it is a customary and that bridge needs to be crossed...prior to consider working there..

as for the $50 a day..you son is priceless and if the babysitter is good and you and your wife, have faith in her and piece of mind..then $50 is cheap...

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Its hard to say No these days considering the way things are right now, I do what I do for less these days but my bills remain the same. Although it seems there is plenty of jobs out there in her line of work, has it been tough for her to get a interview? If not I say hit the road, if so work and wait it out and her day will come. Although if its possible for her not to work and spend that time with the kid I think that would be the best choice until she can get paid for what shes worth.

hello Steve,

I don't know if it is filipino thing that we won't ask about benefits and pay scale when accepting a job. Anyway, I understand Jinky's desire to accept the job. I just got a job and it is just above the minimum too. I applied to many companies for 18 months and I was hired last Saturday. My husband at first won't let me have this kind of job but I told him that I need to have working experience here and I need to do something. With Jinky , it would be hard though since you have a son and need to have a babysitter.

Sorry to read about all this. But i understand that it is really hard when you first arrive here to speak up and ask about things like salary and benefits. It really stinks... and the job market stinks.

If she really wants to give it a shot and get experience in the US that is one thing, but if you guys can afford her not working for a little while longer, maybe she could keep looking...?

Has she applied to a lot of places?
