Jinky had a sit down interview last week and was asked by the dentist that if her child would get sick, would she have to leave work early. Then she was asked to come in and have a work interview today - a full day shift for a measly hourly rate, much less than what many offices are advertising. So when she was introduced to the rest of the office personnel, the dentist said she is an entry level assistant. There was no discussion during the sit down interview regarding pay should she be offered the job.

So I just talked to her and the dentist wants her to come in tomorrow...still no discussion about pay. My impression is this dentist is getting around having to negotiate pay with the way she introduced Jinky and by avoiding discussing pay. I hate to talk about exact figures, but I don't think it's possible to explain this fully. Most offices out here offer $16-18 per hour for an assistant. This dentist paid her $10/hr today for the work interview. We found a babysitter that will watch our son for $50 a day (which I think is fair...it's hard work). The whole thing just gets me frustrated.

If the dentist won't pay the going rate, is it worth your while to hold out and keep searching for one who will? Or how about taking it to get some experience and keep looking for a better paying office?

She's kind of leaning towards taking it for the experience. The thing is - she was a dentist for 5 yrs. back in her country, with 2 yrs. running her own practice. IMO, she's more than qualified to work as an RDA and that should factor into her pay.

Agreed. The assistant to my dentist is from Honduras and she had her own practice there. She said she would need more schooling to be licensed here and she doesn't have the money. Getting a bit of experience here can't hurt, but I agree she should get paid what is fair.

Several big hoops....she's working on that though. Took part I of the national board exam a couple of months ago and didn't pass. She can take it again though. It's a long road ahead and may take a few years.

Brother, seems to me this chopfvck is trying to pull a fast one on sister jinky. If I were her; I would go prepared to tell him "ok Mr. Chop, my going rate is ****, what are you proposing?" --- because this azz can delay the talk or not have it at all and pretend to pay jinky those 10/hourly, and that is more than fvcked up.

That's what I'm telling Jinky. She puts a lot more faith in people treating her fairly than I do. When someone tries to underpay, it really gets my goat. Even places like Costco pay more than $10/hr with benefits.

Yep, it's a no-no. Specially considering her degree and experience. This guy is either a complete fvcktard, or he is an absentminded one. Either, is not good.

p.s. -- you know what I was thinking? She should check out jobs in Schools of Dentistry around the area Steven. Seriously, she should look into that.
