Spoilers - last warning!

Disclaimer - I am a Trekkie from way back - (like 1972 onwards)

Overall I loved the movie. Bold new start. Made new time line - now they have a clean slate, and can re-tell some of the old stories with new twists.

The acting was pretty good, it reminded me of the old players, but they were new all over again. Good CGI, fast pace, no real dull moments.

Props to Bones and Sylar Spock.

I loved how the first guy to die from the new Enterprise was a red shirt (well - his suit was red). Not a lot of people caught that :)

Orion slave girl as Kirk's cadet adventures - classic.

Kobayashi Maru - nice nod to the old movies. Kirk could of least tried to make it look hard

Nit Picks.

The whole episode where Kirk and Scotty beam into the enterprise seemed to be put in for laughs. I mean, they would beam in "blind"?

Why would they have a big ball of red matter (that makes the black hole singularity) when they just needed a single drop?

A super nova that will threaten the whole galaxy? really? no, really?

Small slip, Delta Vega (the planet that Spock and Kirk are marooned on) is actually by the galactic barrier. Guess the Vulcans renamed a planet in their system the same...

Both Vulcan and Earth had no self-defense Star Ships to protect the planets? Heck, Kirk and Sulu destroyed the drill platform with hand phasers, somebody on those planets couldn't do the same?

And finally - if they had all that red matter, why the need to make a hole to the center of the planet? Large black hole on the surface would do just as much damage.

(I know - they did a lot of plot devices to move the story... but come on :))

I see they green lighted a sequel -- sweet....

They didn't explicitly state this, but the universe that the new star trek movie is based on is a parallel universe in a different time. It's implied already, silently.

Really? Everything I have read that it's the same universe, just in the past.

By Nero's ship going into the past (via the wormhole Spock made at the killer nova star), they started a change of history moving forward.

(Kirk's father dies, vulcan gets destroyed, Kirk gets the enterprise right out of starfleet (not even an officer yet).

So everything moving forward will be different - which is just fine :)

Of course it could be part of the multiverse theory - but as shown in past Star Trek films, they manage to always stay in the same 'verse. (FireFly ref)

Ah - Lost is on - Signing off!

Maybe I am just OVER thinking things but I think 99% of the people involved with this disaster should be eaten alive by angry rabid Tribbles!!! The only one, right off the bat, which should be given a pass, is the guy that played Bones. He is the ONLY actor that lived up to the VERY big shoes they were trying to fill. Capt. Pike was OK but we don’t have a lot to go on with him from ST:OS. I don’t think the Pike from the 60s would have given a cadet the 1st officer job but ok give them a pass on that.

I agree with all the Nit Picks from above and do NOT think this was an alt dimension story. I WISH it was an alt vers but I fear it is not. My biggest prob comes in that there are SO many important moments in the “future” of the star trek vers from the OS, movies, TNG, DS9 and VOY that DIRECTLY involves Vulcan. Take for example, Spock’s PonFarr from the OS. What are the odds the girl made it off Vulcan or if she is the other man living as well. One of the Greatest moments in star trek history does NOT exist now. When Spock dies and they go back to…um…oh yes VULCAN to get his katra out of Bones and back in him, and AGAIN what are the odds that out of only 10,000 the 100 year old lady that did the ceromony made it off the planet? But even BEYOND that the idea that only 10,000 vulcans lived is INSANE. In the TV show Enterprise whiich happened BEFORE all of this so their time line is uneffectd, the Vulcans has colonies on many other worlds so there SHOULD be more then just 10,000 and if there were other vulcan planets why could they not have blown up one of them to start with on the way to Vulcan and then stoped Nero before he could blow up Vulcan and alter the time line TOO much.

I think it just comes down to VERY poor writing and MANY if not ALL of these things could have been fixed with just a LITTLE more attention to the details and NOT just trying to make a buck off of then name of Star Trek. They could have done a Good movie that DID NOT mess with the established time line in a major way.

And you don’t even want to hear all of my thoughts on the idea that they made the 1701 come off as looking more powerful then the 1701-a b c d or E…or the fact that the Orion slave girl could NOT be in star fleet because of again on Enterprise they showed that they give off such powerful Pheromons that half the men on campus would be insane by her 2nd year.

Like I said MAYBE I just put WAY too much thought into things like this but it would NOT have taken much more effort to do this film in such a way that it did not COMPLETELY unravel the 40 years of tv and movies, and there is just NO excuse for being slopy with the details when it comes to something that is so important to so many people.

We just returned home from seeing it. As an avid childhood fan of the original show who has missed out on most of the updates, one thing that made me laugh was how much the Kirk character whithered around on the floor like Bill Shatner did when down. A few of the actors looked a lot like the originals from the show, McCoy and Spock's father, in particular. I didn't recognize Scottie right off. It was nice seeing Leonard Nimoy, even if he was a bit stiffer than usual. I didn't over think it, just enjoyed it.

I liked the interplay between the characters (though Scotty and Chekov as comedy relief characters was a bit OTT), but there were some really massive holes in the plot.

Not least that the source villain's angst was the result of a natural disaster. Quite why the Romulans would rely on one guy and an experimental space craft racing at high warp to prevent the disaster is pretty illogical. You'd think they'd have been able to detect the impending collapse of their star and evacuate the planet - and it would have made more sense than relying on one guy to drop the supernova into a black hole.

And just what difference would this have made anyway - without its sun the planet is sort of screwed anyway, assuming of course that it didn't get sucked into the black hole right along with it!

The screenwriters also used the exact same plot device to establish Kirk and Spock's teen angst (Kirk's dead dad, Spocks human mother).

Kurtzman and Orci are terrible screenwriters imo.

Why would they have a big ball of red matter (that makes the black hole singularity) when they just needed a single drop?

Because a planet is very very small, while a blue giant star is really really big.

A super nova that will threaten the whole galaxy? really? no, really?

YARLY. Astronomers have detected supernovae in distant galaxies that, had they occurred in ours, would wipe out life as we know it.

I thought the movie was very good. I especially liked the new Chekov and his Russian extreme! accent.

Most of the answers you are seeking are found in the "prequel" comic Countdown

Basically the Romulans pulled a "Krypton" and didn't believe it would affect them, then the Vulcans didn't want to give them "red matter" tech, and back and forth, so Nero and Spock tried to fix it themselves, (with the STNG crew), and they "failed" - so Nero is super mad.

But that was the major problem for me, it wasn't the Romulan star in their system, it was "close" (not sure how close) to their system. So, somehow, the shock wave travelled light-years in a matter of seconds. If our sun went nova - we would find out about it in 8 mins. But if the Alpha Centauri "A" goes nova, for example, it would take 4 years to reach us. Plenty of time to leave the planet.

They left a lot of footage on the floor that explained more of the back story (like how the Klingon's found Nero after the initial destruction of the fed ship, and had them in prison for 40+ years (Uhura talks about the "escape" sub-light traffic), and that Spock and Kirk just "had" to meet, or the universe would unravel, things like that.).

Agree about the comedy relief part - sort of silly for the federation officers to be like that - but --- :star:

I didn't over think it, just enjoyed it.

Yeah - if you left your "thinking" at home, and just went to watch it - it's great :)

Why would they have a big ball of red matter (that makes the black hole singularity) when they just needed a single drop?

Because a planet is very very small, while a blue giant star is really really big.

But - black hole singularity's are very, very, small. Not much would be needed to suck in the star.

A super nova that will threaten the whole galaxy? really? no, really?

YARLY. Astronomers have detected supernovae in distant galaxies that, had they occurred in ours, would wipe out life as we know it.

Not in the whole galaxy! Granted, if the nova happens within 100 light years of Earth, it would hurt us (depending on the size) - but it wouldn't affect the entire galaxy. (space is very large :))

(Now the back story, as mentioned in "Countdown" said this nova would destroy the planet and re-prime itself. -- )

It's sounds good on paper - but the science isn't there. Now if they had the star in the Romulan system go nova, and threat to the galaxy was a wandering band of warring Romulans, that would of been better, and would of fitted in the science.

You shouldn't have to read a comic to get the backstory the movie should be self-contained (like The Dark Knight, or Casino Royale).

Concur - but, merchandising!

We have here our Schwartz dinner plates, our Schwartz rings, and Schwartz action figures....
