Can anyone answer some questions about my arrival in the US.

I will be leaving Cairo and my first stop in the US will be in New York. I only have less than 2 hours before I take my next flight to Atlanta. Can anyone give me an idea of what will happen once I land in New York? I believe my luggage will go straight through to Atlanta so will I have to do anything other than go to the terminal to board the next flight?

I will not be here on a visit but to remain since I received my K1 Visa. I am just unsure if I will have enough time before my next flight out if I have to go through any immigration or customs in New York or if I would do that in Atlanta when I get my luggage.

you need to go through immigraion in new york because that is your port of entry. you need to hand over your "brown"envelope to the Customs and Boarder Patrol agents. and most likely answer a few questions they asked you, take a picture, and fingerprints, then you can go board your next flight...

You probably will need to go through customs in NY with your luggage. Make sure to ask at the airport. I think 2 hours is going to be really tight. Good luck!

Don't forget to ask for your I-94 if they forget to give you one. My husband went through JFK last August and he said it was quick and very easy and he had no problems. I pray the same for you, selvatoree.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I had less than 2 hrs. in between my three stop over to my final destination which is Atlanta. You make sure that your luggage will be transferred to your next connecting flight coz i had a bad experience on that. When i checked in in Manila they said i will claim my baggage in Atlanta but did nt know they did not transfer my luggage to my 2nd flight which what happened was i had to check out my luggage from my 1st flight and checked it in in my next flight..good thing i asked ..so you better ask for sure.

You will HAVE to collect your bag and go through customs with it at your POE, new york. It will be 'checked' through to Atlanta, but its a requirement of US customs that you bring it through the customs area personally. Usually just past customs there is somewhere that you can drop it to put it back in the system.

Just be sure someone is there to take your bag at the drop after customs. Last time my wife and I went through JFK, we were told to leave our bags at a drop but there was no agent. Our bags didn't make it on our flight. On the plus side, the bags were delivered to our apartment the next day, saving us the trouble of having to transport them back from the airport.

My husband has entered the US twice from Cairo. He said the line goes very quickly and that they were very helpful to him. He had to have help because he switched airlines so he had to check his bag in to a different airline and they sent somebody with him. Also, I am not sure what kind of visa you are but if you are a k1 ask for the work stamp if you are interested in any kind of work before you file for AOS.

Unfortunatly you must pick up your bags at the first POE. Though I havn't used JFK, I travel alot from assorted latin american countries and where I live its always a two stop trip. Always the first POE, in your case JFK, is where you go through immigration/passport control then you go pick up your checked bags and go through customs. When you leave customs there should be a spot to drop bags for connecting flights. If there isn't much traffic try to make sure someone gets your bag, or at least sees you drop it off. If it's crowded and the bags are piling up I try to find a section with space closest to the handlers to place it. If immigration and customs took a while and you're worried on time make sure you let one of the handlers know you're next flight is very soon. They'll usually push it through quickly. If you don't tell anyone they won't know your pushing for time. Not sure on JFK but most airports you have to go through another security check. When you get to Atlanta, just pick up your bags and go.
