No. The person does not have to be "certified", the document has to be certified. Any person competent in both klanguages can do the translation, then certify that it is a true and correct translation of the document. They do this by placing their statement that it is a true and accurate translation, that they are fluent in both languages and have their signature notarized. You can do them yourself if you like.

I am sure about that. They may have gotten RFE'd for translatig their documents incorrectly, but not fo rdoing it themselves. Several VJ members have received their visas with documents translated by my wife. She is no more "certified" than you or I, but the documents she produces are.

Nevertheless, it's ok. What I usually recommend to petitioners who are fluent in both languages, is to do the translation work themselves, add the certification paragraph and then have one of their bilingual friends check it over and sign it.

Well... I was told by the US embassy that the translator has to be court certified. They have a certain stamp that is issued and that is the only stamp acceptable on translated documents. I would check with your Embassy.

That's exactly what I did, but if I'd have known that it's perfectly fine to translate it yourself, I would have saved myself some time. Oh well.

Well... I was told by the US embassy that the translator has to be court certified. They have a certain stamp that is issued and that is the only stamp acceptable on translated documents. I would check with your Embassy.

Then it would be almost impossible to get a translation. There may be laws about this in CZ Republic (there are in Ukraine) but not in the USA and not for embassy purposes.

I was told by the Ukraine embassy (in writing) that our son did not need a police certificate for Russia (where he is a student) They were wrong, now it is MY problem.

The peitioner does not need any documents translated, the beneficiary does, so the petitioner will never be translating his "own" documents. My wife chose not to do her own for the same reason. She was sure they would not accept them if she did her own (they can read both languages, they know if someone is trying to pull a fast one) The consulate told her she could have, so now she has done all the translations for our son's K-2 (to follow) interview and will do the translation for the Russian police certificate too.
