My fiancee is a language teacher in Poland and would like to continue teaching here in the USA, but we are having difficulty understanding what we need to do so that she can get proper recognition / evaluation of her academic studies / diploma from abroad (Poland)

I assume she will need English translations of some kind and perhaps some evaluation of her curriculum, etc? Has anyone been through this process before? I would suspect it must be similar to the process required for a student to transfer here for advanced studies from abroad (?)

Any guidance or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

TIA

My husband is a teacher in Egypt. I called the school board here and they told me to get his credentials translated and then there is an application you fill out.

Go to your state's profession registration department and they ought to have guidance on what license she should have and how much her existing credentials and/or experience will be credited for here.

Many thanks kaffy! We were looking for this on tcert, but didn't see it!!

Do you know how to register on this site if you don't have an SSN? We couldn't find any way to do that either! Most colleges issue fake ssn's to foriegn students for ID purposes, so I expected some way to do this here, but don't see it.

Also it says:

Copies of original credentials must include an original signature and seal from a United States Notary Public on each copied page submitted.

What is this... a notary public must validate the copies when the copies are made? I've never heard of a notary doing this. Would this be something my fiance would get done at the Embassy in Warsaw?

Finally, do you know who would have to make the translations? Could my fiance do them or would they have to be translated by an independent agency?

thanks!

Ah! just found this... apparently there is also an "alternative program" ...

http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/career...htm#alternative

New York State also offers an alternative preparation model aimed at mature, second career professionals.

... which sounds like it might apply. If anyone has any knowledge of this or similar for other states, I much appreciate it! :)

I've also been looking into pathways for someone to teach on a J-1 visa... not that we would expect to need one, but rather since I would expect a similar set of streamlined requirements based on prior experience. :)

TIA!

You make a copy of the credential and bring both copy + original to the notary public. He/she will validate that the copy is a true copy of the original and validate the copy with a signature & seal. If there are multiple pages then the notary public has to notarize each page.

Yes, check with the US Embassy there if they offer this service. In other countries I have been the Embassy/Consulate does offer the service for a fee.

Re: translations

I would use a translating service that is affiliated with the American Translators Association http://www.atanet.org/ Preferably one who has had experience with credential translations

Greetings!

Most of the time Educational Certificates ( diplomas ,Transcript of Records) are to be evaluated by NACES or National Association of Credential Evaluation Services ( http://www.naces.org/members.htm) After it is evaluated one copy is to be sent directly to the board of Education of the State where you wanted to teach. ( different state may vary).

And if you are in NEW YORK this may help http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/certificate/index.html and i guess after evaluation...the board of education have specific steps on how to be licence to work

EXAMPLE:

POLAND

At any time during the evaluation process, ECE reserves the right to request the following: Original documents; documents to be sent directly to ECE by issuing institutions; and/or a plan of studies that includes the units, credits, or number of hours of instruction for each subject.

• Photocopies of all official educational credentials issued in the official language of the country (Polish), beginning with the final year of secondary school. Send all those which apply to your educational history: Świadectwo ukonczenia...(Certificate of Completion of ...) / Świadectwo dojrzałości ... (Certificate of Maturity from a ...); Indeks (Study Book); Dyplom (Diploma); Diploma Supplement for completed programs of study.

• Photocopies of English translations. You may prepare the translations yourself, as long as they are complete, literal, word-for-word, and in the same format as the original document. No English translations will be returned.

• Subject Analysis, Catalog Match, and Health Professions Licensure reports require a syllabus or other type of course descriptions to be submitted for all postsecondary academic subjects.

• Please check with the institution(s) to which you plan to submit our evaluation report for any additional documentation they might require. Some institutions require that we base our evaluation reports on original documents. If you plan to submit our evaluation report to one of them, you must submit original educational documents to us.

• If you submit insufficient documentation, we will contact you. We will keep your application active for six months, but you may request an extension. If we do not hear from you within six months or by the end of the extension, we will inactivate your application. A $60 re-activation fee is required if you want us to resume our evaluation after that date. If another six months passes without us hearing from you, we will discard all documentation. If you contact us after your documents have been discarded, a new application form, evaluation fee, and all documentation will be required.

• ECE will return original documentation sent in response to the instructions in Required Documentation, and any other original documentation specifically requested by ECE. You may request courier delivery for their return. If you do not request courier delivery, we will return your original documents via regular mail. All non-original documents, documents issued directly to us by academic institutions, original curricula and syllabi, and all photocopies become ECE's property and will not be returned.
