There's something the U.S. government doesn't want you to know. And it's come out again in the new Heritage Foundation report on education. It conveys that the general public is increasingly dissatisfied with public schools, with a rising number opting for private education.

...

While the members of President Barack Obama's administration profess to have education as a top priority, they did nothing in March when Congress chose to discontinue the Opportunity Scholarship Program. Why? Because they all are in cahoots to not only choose our medical care for us, own the mortgage insurance and finance businesses, and place caps on corporate earnings but also control our educational choices for our children.

I have no problem with private education. But I do have a problem with the voucher system. Giving people a tax credit for sending their kids to private school is the wrong way to do it. When a school accepts a student with a voucher, that school then agrees to the rules and regulations of the government.

The only true and honest way to have private school is to have the government completely out of the subsidization/voucher system and have the parents pay 100% of the cost. I see no reason for parents to get a tax credit for it anyways. People without children still pay public school taxes, so why shouldn't parents of privately taught children?

You bring up some very good points, but I think school vouchers can work if the schools have to comply with anti-discrimination laws.

We've heard this argument before.

The only thing is... it's hard to argue with success!

The G.I. Bill worked exactly this same way, service members were able to take their education dollars and go to any (well almost any) school of their choice, even religious schools.

But lets be honest, it's not about "education" when it comes to vouchers, it's about maintaining the monopoly of Public education.

Obama talked a good game of "change" but so far we have not seen it..... it won't start here either.

i think if you get rid of vouchers and subsidies you end up with an education system that is inherently class based, and caters toward the rich, rather than necessarily the most able students.

Wait, I'm confused.... are you under the impression that we now have vouchers to any great degree?

As it is now, people who have the money (or make it a priority) are able to spare their kids a public education.

The poor typically have few choices in education (as I guess it should be) vouchers would do two major things to bring about real education reform.

Breakup the monopoly trap by giving families a choice.

Hardly any such thing as a private school without some discrimination in one way or another; regardless of the race majority, it's there...on blacks, on whites, on hispanics, on asians, on native americans....it seems to be more prevalent in private schools. I like private schools tho mainly cause of the freedom to teach a specific faith and some like that.
