You can check here https://sa1.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp to see if your refund is being processed. You can also call the IRS refund phone number.

More than likely everything is fine since you have received the tax ID. By the way April 15th is the due date for sending your tax forms, in your case I believe you said you have sent them 2 months ago.

Svetlana,

How did you handle your return, did you do it yourself or did you have a professional tax service agent help you?

I went to HR Block and I had a W7 form that my husband signed and sent to me, and I had a certified copy of his passport and our marriage certificate. They told me they cannot help me because they would need my husband to sign a power of attorney letter and send it back to me, then they would issue an ITIN, then we can file my taxes. Some people on this site have talked about doing their return themselves and sending W7 with it, and that's all, but once I have done that with the tax software I keep getting a message that there is an error since I am not putting in my husband's social sec number (insted I put in "ITIN needed").

So, I didn't feel confident filing a form that is giving me an obvious error message. I am so frustrated. I went to 4 different HR Block offices and no one could help me. They said maybe I could get ITIN if I presented my husband's original passport?! He cannot mail me his passport, I don't even think that's legal to do in any country! I ended up filing for an extension until I figure out what to do ( I am getting refund whether I file as married or single, so I figured that was safe to do).

So, here I am freaking out still what to do.

I know this is a lot to read, but if you could offer some insight into how you have done your taxes it would help me.

Anyone else who has successfully completed their taxes and gotten a refund, do you all have any advice?

Thanks!

do you get that message where it tells you that your return cannot be submitted since you did not put valid social security number for the alien spouse?

Where it asks you for social security number for the spouse, what did you put?

I am following correctly, in the field where his SS3 should go, i should type in: ITIN number needed

Then, when it tells me that my return has error, I should print it out anyway?

Then, together with that form 1040 or whatever it is, you mail also W7 that the spouse has signed, and his/her certified passport?

Since you are filing married jointy, then did you mail 1040 to your spouse to sign, and then sent to IRS, or did you just sign by yourself?

What am I missing, and am i making this more complicated than it is?

Appreciate your time very much!!!

I used taxact and then printed paper. i made mistakes i did it in a hurry last month then emailed to my wife, she printed out and then signed then mailed to me , because i needed desperately for i-864, well when it came time to mail w-7, and notarized passport copy and tax form to the W-7 listed IRS address (not normal one) i was reading another thread on here they said "you submit form 2555 exclusion of foreign income form" well i looked and the tax software did not generate the 2555 form so I said ####### man I did this wrong, so I went through again and added the 2555 form and it spit out 1040, 2555 form and bigger refund! oh geez so now I had had my wife spend 60 bucks US sending me package with some presents and papers and they were not useful suddenly to file taxes, so then I did the sneaky thing and signed for my wife, I didn't have time to have her mail back whoa is me, but the tax form is corrected and once I have teh ITIn number if I need to adjust file I will do it later. Also same issue on teh state form. Oh if my wifee were sitting next to me life would be sooo much easier!
