The U.S. Labor Department's report, released Friday, showed the terrible toll the recession, now in its second year, is having on workers and companies alike.

Seven states have unemployment rates that topped 10 percent last month.

...

Michigan's jobless rate climbed to 12 percent, the highest in the country. South Carolina registered the second-highest at 11 percent and Oregon came in third at 10.8 percent.

North Carolina came in fourth with an unemployment rate of 10.7 percent, the highest there on records dating back to 1976. California and Rhode Island tied for fifth place at 10.5 percent each. That was an all-time high for Rhode Island. The seventh state with a jobless rate above 10 percent was Nevada at 10.1 percent.

Who would have thought Nevada would be on the list?

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

And in the meantime Obama and crew refuse to bar stimulus jobs to illegal aliens or to enforce immigration / work authorization laws to ensure that citizens and legal residents are given priority in tough economic times. Yep...change you can bank on.

What's up with that? It's pretty obvious to me.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

I need to point this out:

Statistics such as unemployment rates, etc. are not entirely real.

They do not count all kinds of people....for example anyone not receiving unemployment, and/or not actively job-hunting.

There are other factors that count people out.

The true numbers are too staggering to publish....both for number of the unemployed and the inflation rate.

See for yourself....

The government is great at creative accounting!

Ha!

Yea, the actual unemployment #'s are always higher. People give up looking for work are no longer counted when they answer the survey question, "Are you looking for work?"

Tourism industry hit hard. Nevada depends much on tourism. Therefore. high unemployment there, too.

Too true. "Discouraged Workers" are not included in the figures (those that started looking for work but stopped actively looking).

I'm just glad I work in a fairly recession proof industry.

The seventh state with a jobless rate above 10 percent was Nevada at 10.1 percent.

Who would have thought Nevada would be on the list?

(1) Large Native American population.

(2) Decline in mining.

(3) Increased gaming in other states, mainly California.

Plus, declines in new house building in Las Vegas I would guess.

These are some bad times we are in, I feel quite lucky to still be relatively unaffected

Actually, Spirit and fozzie, if you actually take a look at the bls website's data section, you'll see that they do still publish the very metrics you both think they don't. Perhaps you both should spend more time there and less time on conspiratorial "the government is evil" blogs.

Oh yeah. California is screwed. And the real trouble hasn't even started yet. In 4 days the higher tax rates take affect and the auto dealers know they are f***d. Its about the get real fun around here.

On that note, my state tax this week just went waaaay up. I made some changes to my deductions 4 weeks ago to try to avoid owing so much at the end of they year. The taxes went up a little bit the first week, but jumped more than double this last paycheck. Did these new rates already go into affect? Anybody else in CA notice that?

Itz good that the gummint allows tent cities, so at least that keeps people from being homeless. Most big cities have cops that will just keep telling you to move on. Itz hard even to find a good doorway to defecate in. :star:
