Okay this is really confusing but bare with me.. Well for any of us here who has gone through grade school here in america, when asked for a middle name you give your second name that's if given one. For example if the whole name is Christine Marie Smith. Marie would be the middle name right? Well why is it that in other countries, the philippines in particular when asked for the middle name they think its the mothers maiden name. For example. Vince Ray Jones Catral. Filipinos would say that Jones would be the middle name instead of Ray.

Well now im confused on what to put on the application. Both me and my fiance have middle names. I have actually filled out the application and as i was reviewing it, I just had to stop myself and confirm. So which one is it?! hehe We're both from the Philippines. I was born in the Philippines but grew up here in the states.

My other question is on my legal documents ie. my passport says both. First name Middle Name and Last name. BUT, on my credit card, bank account statements it only has my First and Last. So which one do i put when filling the applications out? Should i just give both names to ease any confusion and on QUESTION 7. on the I-129f should i also put FIRST and LAST to show the other names that was used?

Im just nervous if don't fill out the applications the correct way i might get and RFE...

Names are a very interesting thing. The United States and most other English based cultures have a given first and middle name which really have little or no meaning other than your parents thought it sounded good. Last name is normally the name of the father. Simple. Other cultures use other methods. French, for example, and Quebecois, typically have a first name of "Marie" for all girls and "Joseph" for all boys followed by a middle name which is usually what the person goes by all their life and their "first" name is rarely used. Russian cultures choose a first name, like we do, and then add the name of the father plus the appropriate suffix for men or women. This is called the "patrynomic" and in many cases it is the only "last name" though some then add the "last name" of the father. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, for example. His name is Vladimir, his fathers name was Vladimir and his fathers last name was Putin. Women often keep their maiden name for life, more often than not, actually. In Russian cultures, unless someone who is an adult is your good friend or family, it is proper to refer to them by their first name and patrynomic. Also all Russian first names (well, almost all) have a formal version and informal "short" name. Tatiana and Tanya, for example. Oddly enough, many times the "short" name is as long or longer than the formal name. Go figure.

Anyway, name lesson over, always put your name as it appears on your passport, or you fiancees name as it appears on their passport. The USCIS does not care about credit cards or bank statements

From experience, always use exactly what's written on your birth cert, NOT your passport. My assumption would be your second name is considered your middle name, and if you have 4 names you'd put names 3 and 4 as your last name. Also if you go by something different make sure you put it in the box for other names you might be known by.

Also just because your passport doesn't have your middle name doesn't mean you don't have one. Your given birth cert name is always the one to use.
