howdy there,

so my husband is a soccer fanatic specifically a liverpool fan. i watch with him but i just don't get the game..

Soccer/Football is much easier to figure out that American Football. Plus having an interest in one of the teams playing or a favorite player helps you to get into it. I'm a Manchester United, so I get more into the game when they play than when say Bolton and Wigan are playing.

karin und otto, thanks so much for the cliff's notes version of the game it helps i'm sure there are nuances and intricacies i will have to watch for awhile to pick up but for now it's just fun to be a man u "fan" to stir the pot at home although my mom is actually a huge man u fan and they bicker and flaunt their gear on game days (it's hilarious).

fozzie we don't really have any games locally other than local school games. i think san jose, ca has a pro team but my husband has no interest in american soccer at all says the americans aren't that good yet. maybe when we go to spain next year they have some solid teams no?

so now football fans i need some help in predictions...we are placing some friendly wagers for all the dishes and laundry our house can muster during the champions league finals etc. who wins?

liverpool vs. chelsea

man u vs. fc porto

barcelona vs. bayern munich

arsenal vs. villareal

thanks a bunch!

I don't understand why there has to be this "rivalry" with soccer and football. I like and enjoy both sports. I understand them both and appreciate both for different reasons. I love football because I was brought up in it. My grandfather coached and I was going to games before I was even born. It's in my blood, I guess you could say. My brothers both played soccer in HS so I like it also. Javi and I sometimes watch it when a team he likes is playing. They are two totally different sports and really shouldn't even be compared to each other. It's not as if one is "better" than the other. That's like saying apples are better than oranges, two totally different fruits. You just can't do it.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

I am more accustomed to women hating all sports in general, but was shocked when my wife, daughter, and mother-in-law went positively nuts with that world champ soccer thing.

Not that difficult to catch on, a lot like ice hockey or even basketball. They play 45 minutes straight, have a half time, then another 45 minutes, but add time to the game if there is timeouts, don't stop the clock. Do not believe I ever watched commercial TV that long without a commercial break. They show it on ESPN known for five minute commercial breaks every 30 seconds.

In regards to ball handling, head and feet, really don't need arms or hand to play soccer, and like hockey, have to get that puck or ball into the confines of the goal with either team attempting to block it. Like basketball, if the ball goes out of bounds, opposite team gets it and takes it back in, also like basketball, instead of a free throw a guy tries to kick it in the goal.

What really annoyed me about this sport, just too many ball hogs, no team play or plays, one guy running down the field kicking the ball with no help from team members or kicking it back and forth to make plays. Guy gets so far and loses it, opposite team does the same thing, so basically just a bunch of running back and forth.

Like baseball, game scores of 1-0 are very common, with extremes of maybe 3-0, but that is rare, if you blink your eye, may miss the winning score. They do have a kick off at the end, five tries so either one or the other team wins if a tie score. Could do just that and save 90 minutes of watching for most games.

A non-contact sport like our basketball, wife feels our football is way too rough, showed her a picture of me wearing my football uniform, LOL, guess what you married.

I don't really know which game you watched but I'm pretty sure it wasn't one of these...

There is more technique on kicking a football and score than just holding an American football really tight and running past the scoring line. Technique Vs Muscle

If Christian Ronaldo, Kaka or Messi has the ball who else on the team would you want to go to the goal to take shot.
