This is a fun topic.

My American husband does not get the whole Marmite thing (but plenty of brits don't either!!). But for most other stuff he not only is chill with it, but now prefers a lot of Brit stuff to American stuff. He likes beans on toast, and roast dinners, and putting milk in his tea (and since i've been here I actually drink more green tea than the usual builders). He especially likes british sweeties (except for Jelly Babies which are gross to him...he can't understand why they are covered in chalk dust as he puts it!)

Umm...other than foodie things, here are some others:

Americans often have a weird way of holding their cutlery. Like holding a fork in their fist and then cutting all their food up in little bits...same way small children do in the UK. Fortunately the husband is something of a mimic, so he doesn't do that any more, but it amazes me to see people eat like that in nice restaurants.

And the popcorn with lime etc looks good!!!! Where can I get some of that in the DC area?

After living in the UK for 3 years, I eat 'properly' as well. My brothers back in the states make fun of me now because they say that I eat everything with a knife and fork...which apparently is something to make fun of! I told the guys here in Brazil how us Americans eat without a knife and they thought it was really funny. I will never understand why Americans have to switch hands to cut things up! Why don't we all just learn how to hold the cutlery correctly!

As one of the Limey VJ'ers (in Cleveland) once stated "every bloke likes beans on toast" (I analysed it--and found that due to variations of this being ubiquitous, it's true).

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Well,
  • If the person in question is first-generation naturalised Chinese, Japanese or Vietnamese immigrant--well, dairy products (including cheese) simply are not found in their typical diet
  • if truly allergic to all dairy products (I overheard a Caucasian woman of such description once in Italian restaurant; she consistently substituted out dairy products, and then mentioned this fact to waiter )
  • if the person is a PETA activist--then you can just sub in "chop" for "PETA activist"!

Except you can't get the 'right sort' of beans in the US. I have tried the vegetarian baked beans and they are just too sweet. What's with having everything taste like desert, including bread? :)

Solution: get dried beans (only about a bazillion kinds to choose from at average supermarket) cook them at home with some Hunt's (or Contadina) Tomato Sauce. Edited by CherryXS

I like the vegetarian beans just because I'm used to them, but that's one of the first things I gave my husband when he arrived, and he was not impressed at all.

I cook dried beans all the time but I have never tried to make good baked beans, never needed to in the UK, a 20p can of beans did the trick :)

Now adding curry powder might be a good plan...

Sure, beans on toast is whatever you want it to be, simple and nutritious and a great fiber provider :)
