Yes you can of course renew it. You can renew it in Sweden and the US. You can also order it in Sweden and have them send it to a Swedish embassy in the states.

But if you, like me, think it's a total waste of money to renew a license I only use 1 or 2 times a year it sounds like it's fine to use your American license if the Swedish one is expired.

Just curious how long are you guys DL valid for? Here it's till we are 70 years old.

I don't know. I've had 3 and only for a few years. First one invalid because of switching order of my middle names (Swedes have a tendency to put a middle name in front of your first name which confuses foreigners and I got tired of it), 2nd my husband lost somewhere along some interstate and the 3rd one is now invalid because of name change after marriage...

Oh I see. Damn I didn't think of the name change on my danish one! Thanks for telling me!! :D

Good advice, Maria. Thank you. My license has always been valid for 10 years this far (I hope they haven't changed it?), so it's still a few years until I need to renew mine. I like the thought of having a valid Swedish license and since it hardly costs anything and it's valid for 10 years I think it's worth renewing it for me. But like you said, Maria, having only the American one works just as fine of course.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone else brought a cat (or animal) with them to the US? :-)

I have a cat, and she has been my little furbaby since i got her 9 years ago. And we have been through everything together, and of course she will come to the US as well ;)

I am going to go see my vet here in a few days to ask about it, but i was just wondering if anyone else had tried it before? :-)

Kindly,

Niels&Kandie

Hey Niels & Kandie, yes, my husband brought his Dog with him from Norway when he moved here this year in march. Here is a very helpful site for you: http://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/cats.html

Like it says on the site, a health certificate and a rabies shot is not required to enter the US for a cat; however, most airlines require the health certificate to fly so just double check with who you will be possibly flying out on to see.

All we needed for his dog was the health certificate and we went ahead and got her rabies shot because she was coming to the US which has them from Norway which doesn't. Better safe then sorry. Also, once she was here we had to re-up some of her vaccinations that are required by the state but that varies from state to state.

Hi Prystine,

Thank you so much for your reply :D

That is amazing, sounds like it is not going to be too hard to do.

I went to my vet yesterday, and arranged a price for:

- Usual vaccination

- Rabbies

- Health cert.

- OK to fly 1 week before

- EU Passport (is good to have in case we need to land or get redirected inside the EU for any reason)

All in all i got a price about $300 for everything she needs!

Now i just need one of those approved cages to transport her in ;)

One question i have is:

is your dog chipped? and was it requirement?

My vet asked me, and she only has the ear tattoo.. but they only do the chips in the US ;)

/Niels

Yeah that sounds about right on price, ours was around 500 but our dog is a whippet/malamute mix so she's a medium to large dog so costs a bit more.

Yes, she is chipped. I forgot that was another requirement to fly from the airlines, for a dog anyway. Not sure if they require it for a cat but we figured we would rather have her chipped either way and yes, our vet here scanned it and it shows up in their system so we know it works internationally. :)

Quick question: Has anyone here gone to the Gothenburg clinic for their medical -- or knows what the cost for doing the medical there is (including xray and everything)?

I'm gonna need to boost my tetanus vaccine, and was initially gonna get it done before the medical. But now I'm thinking I might just wait and get it done during the medical, since it's just the one shot. My only fear is that it's going to be crazy expensive (it's 465:- to get it at my local health care centre). Does anyone know the pricing for that stuff at the clinic? Should I just go ahead and get it ahead of time?

I'm going to Göteborg myself when that day comes, I was told the cost for the medical was 2900kr a year ago, and the x-ray is about 500 kr.

I need the same shot as you and I'm getting it now on friday at the local clinic (350 kr) just to be prepared (maybe the medical will go faster then too), let's hope it doesn't take 10 years to get the NOA2 and interview so I have to take another tetanus shot...

I had my medical done here in Gothenburg two weeks ago, I was actually very surprised by how it went so I'll give you a quick summary.

It cost 2800:- total, no extra costs for bloodwork or x-rays.

First you are taken by a nurse to have blood drawn, blood pressure taken, height measured, weight checked, and then you do a quick vision test.

You then go and see the doctor, now this part surprised me, he said to me the amount of questions he is supposed to ask is crazy long so he'll keep it simple and just asked me if I'm in general good health, do I have any problems / medical conditions to which I replied no, I then gave him my childhood vaccination records (MMR and Polio) and a more recent one for Hepatitis A+B which wasn't really required for my age (29).

I then took my shirt off and he listened to my breathing did a few reflex tests and that WAS IT.

I even asked him about needing more vaccinations and he told me flat out that the vaccine requirements they expect people from here to get (I'm from the UK, but lived here in Sweden for 5 years) is crazy considering Sweden and the UK have better healthcare systems than the USA, and expecting us to pay for vaccines like we are from a third world country is ridiculous. So he ticked all the boxes, wrote down that I need no additional vaccinations and sent me on my way to have my X-Rays done, the X-Rays are performed at a hospital called Carlanderska which is a 10 minute walk away from the doctors office (again no extra cost).

So yeah I was pretty surprised at how.... easy it was.

That sounds great, Sev15! I'll go to that clinic myself if my visa journey ever moves forward. Seems cheaper than Stockholm too, I think the lady at the clinic there told me it'd cost 3300 kr for the exam only and then another 500 for the x-ray, plus vaccines if I needed some.

That is incredibly reassuring - and cheaper than I thought! :) I feel a lot more relaxed about the whole thing after reading this and will definitely go to the Gothenburg clinic once the time comes (which hopefully isn't too far into the future... still waiting on the dang NOA2).
