Jodie,

I have always had feather comforters with duvet covers. We call the feather comforter a duvet sometimes too, use the words interchangably. I know what you mean about the feathers all over the place, between the comforter and my feather pillows (even though they are all covered) I find them all over. Good luck

well i guess thats why i get the funny 'look' from my mother-in-law when i mention finding a duvet cover for the futon mattress in the guest room, regular sheets pop off ll the time, i thought this a brilliant idea, she didnt seem to share my joy...now i know why, it was the polite 'idonthaveacluewhatyouaretalkingabout' reaction...sister countres, yet so many differences...

i'll have to add duvet to my canadian to american dictionary and get it back up online....it has helped!!!! LOL

The feathers are mostly the function of the quality of the cover material. With the best/most dense ones, you won't have any feathers. I also have a down featherbed (I think that's what they are called -- the one you put on top of your mattress). I inherited the featherbed from a Japanese roommate and it has 0 "leakage," while the winter comforter from Costco does shed a bit. But the duvet cover takes care of this.

I have two down comforters -- a summer one and a winter one. The "duvet cover" is what you use with your comforter to keep it clean and for decorative purposes, since most down comforters are just white. BTW, I have no trouble washing my down comforters in the washing machine.

I'll restate my "eeeeew, duvet" sentiment.... don't like 'em.

On our bed, we have the top sheet, a verrrrrrrrrry thin blanket and a comforter. Since my body temp seems to change throughout the night, I may use all, or none of those. When I go to bed, I'm usually warmer, so just the sheet and blanket, loosley over me, is fine, but then I swear my body temp drops and I need to be more covered, tightly and snuggled, so I pull the blanket up more around me, and if I get chillier, the comforter is at the bottom of the bed and can be pulled up. With one heavy duvet, that wouldn't be possible. I'd probably be too hot for some of the night, so I'd kick the duvet off, and then I'd bee too cold.

And besides that, I've found that beneath a duvet cover, a duvet can shift, making the whole thing lumpy...

Thankfully, hubster doesn't care...and doesn't seem to miss his old duvet. I asked if he wanted one and he said no.

I don't understand why everyone is getting them shipped over? LOTS of places sell duvets online over here...Ikea, smartbargains, overstock, ebay to name just a few...and they're a good price. We got our duvet from Bed and Bath, and guest duvets from Ikea and overstock.

Actually I tried to get info on duvets in the US - cos it'd be SO much easier to get them there - and I DON'T want a feather filled one - I want one I can machine wash - and I found very little if any :(

Are they easy to buy over in the US? (as per the one I want?)

If so - where! lol

ANother thing I noticed purely from Google searches was the PLETHORA of really awful duvet cover slips - all roses and chinz - ewwww... Don't want our bedroom looking like an old lady lives there..hate all that flouncy stuff  I like the bold colors and patterns (and even the subdued ones but NO FLOWERS!) you can get here..except they re almost impossible to get in US size king duvet sizes in the UK :(

And you also can get decently priced ones at JC Penneys (including their outlet stores) ... I recently bought one at Tuesday Morning .... SmartBargains.com (who are very like Overstock.com) usually seem to have quite a few too. Can't remember where else I've seen duvets, but they're definitely easier to find than they used to be, even 4 or 5 years ago.

Actually I had managed to convince Kyle that duvets are the doggie's whatsits even before we'd met face to face. So much so that he decided to go right ahead and buy himself an oversized King sized down duvet from SmartBargains a month or so before we met for the first time - How about that for powers of persuasion! Hmm, hang on a minute ... "Come up and see my duvet"... :o ... Oh well, it only took 3 years to get him to make an honest woman of me afterwards!

Mind you, our wonderful duvet is pretty thick and warm, so we've ended up using a lighter comforter/sheet combination for the hottest part of the year in the past. I really don't like that though and this year I've got a summer weight duvet as well now, so no more tangled sheets for us ... Yippee!

For those that don't want/like down fillings, well, IMO anyway, a decent quality synthetic filled duvet can feel almost as good as down, the filling is less easily crushed as well. I'm sure I've read that you can even get duvets filled with wool as an alternative to down!

Anyway, I don't mind which filling you get, as long as you get one!:thumbs:

Jaylen Brit - I know what you mean about covers. We have the additional issue that our current duvet is even a bit oversized for a US King! Are you any good at sewing? The previous posters' suggestions about making your own covers out of sheets is a really good idea and it's very simple to do too.

All the best

I have got some really stylish covers from places like West Elm, and CB2 at good prices, and the odd Ikea one. I also HATE most of the nasty flowery/chintz/ugly pattern covers on offer but if you avoid 'high street' and look around there really are some good ones. Actually I find them better quality than the cheapo ones in the UK. TJMaxx is probably another option too.
