Hey everyone

I have a question I have been living in the US since 2007 and got my 2 year Greencard in April of 2008.

This summer I am wanting to travel either to Europe or to the Bahamas with my husband.

I am a dual citizen ( British and German) and always used my German passport to travel. However the German one is running out of date very soon so I was wondering if I could travel with the British one.

The reason why I am asking is because my British passport was issued in June or July of 2001 (so before 9/11) It is valid until 2011.

Can I use this passport to travel??? I am not sure if it meets the requirments that came after 9/11. Machine readable etc.

Can somebody please help me? I am confused. Does somebody possible have a helpful link for that?

Thanks!

I suppose it depends on where you wish to go... the machine readable ones, for some countries, exempted you from visa requirements...

YMMV

i'm pretty sure that all of the red covered passports are machine readable. i think that refers back to when we had those old black ones with hand written stuff in them and a hard cover, someone correct me if i'm wrong. :) mine doesn't have the rfid chip but is machine readable, it's a couple of years newer than yours but is probably the same.

do you have two lines like this at the bottom of the passport?

i found an article on this from 2004 - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3953237.stm

All Britons travelling to the US without visas now need machine-readable passports under newly-introduced rules.

Almost all British passports issued since 1991 are machine-readable, indicated by two lines of coded data at the bottom of the photo page.

i hope this helps!

Yes it is the red passport and it has that barcode thingy at the bottem.

Oh and my Passport's are both still in my maiden name.

Is that a problem? My Greencard is in my new name.

Thanks!

you will carry your name change document (marriage certificate?) to "bridge" the name gap...

YMMV

Any idea anybody?

<guess>

Because the I-485 (ie the form from which USCIS generate your permanent resident registration) asks for a single country of citizenship/nationality and they'd have trouble matching you with their computer records if you presented yourself at the border as being a citizen of a different country?

</guess>

Personally, if only to avoid any risk and make things less complicated, I'd travel on the passport that matched the country of birth shown on the greencard, renewing it if necessary.

I went to the bahamas when I had a green card, I took with me my UK passport and green card, carried with me wedding certificate, wasn't asked for wedding certificate, they are more intrested in seeing that the green card is valid at the immigration. They stamp your passport swipe your greencard and your back in the USA.
