Change water once a month. About one third.

What kind of fish do you have?

I used to have several hundred gallons of fish tanks. It is important to keep good water circulation and filtering. Make sure you have good aerator. Fresh water fish have a tendancy to get ick. Do you fish have white spots on them? If you see any identifiable symptoms you can probably google it and find a remedy. This kind of makes me want to start doing fish again

Is it possible a fish is attacking the others? Some can be very territorial.

i just had a beta die that lived for 2.5 years. i think this is some sort of record cos my sister has been through 4 of them and she quit trying. i cleaned the bowl once a week and fed him one pellet at a time so that food didn't rot in the bowl. he stopped eating about a month before he passed, so i knew he was on his way out.

try buying your fish from another place. and definitely clean the tank (no soap) that the other fish died in before introducing new fish. take care when transporting them from store to home so they aren't in shock. then leave them in the bag and put the closed bag in the water for 30 min. before opening and pouring into your tank so they get used to the water temp. oh...and i always used bottled water- not tap water. good luck!

well i tried to get compatible fish well at least what the shop said was, i had a beta fish in there that we had in a very small fish bowl for a few months it died yesterday we were careful not to get any tropcials that has the pretty long fins cuz they told us the beta would bite on that so i just dont know i have not really kept fish myself other than that beta so relied on what the fish shop said to do............

Was told drinking the water out of a tap in Venezuela could kill me, what about your water killing your fish. Had the best luck with fish in the country with my own well, tested to standards, chlorine and fluorine added to most city water can kill fish, and leaving it sit even for a couple of weeks doesn't get rid of all it. Running it through a carbon filter several times can get rid of most of it. And while your own city water may be good, your dwelling plumbing could be bad introducing copper and lead into the water.

Normally a large aquarium fairs out much better than a smaller one with a good balance between plants and fish, filtration, aeration, clean filters, and a good pump, but when our old 20 gallon aquarium broke, seams gave out and made one heck of a mess, was glad to get rid of it. Get a dog.

i assume you are adding a chlorine remover to the water when you filled it up, and when you change out water?

Yea, I used to have a lot of different cichlids and they just loved to fight and eat one another

Me too. With cichlids you pretty much have to pack the tank.

As for the well water, I assume even the well water is treated?
