Hello all,

I wanted to get peoples opinion on something. I own a redbone coonhound. I was told by a cousin that ####### was racist term. I thought huh, what?, so I googled it. I really didnt find much on it that would imply that it was a racial term. In my searches I came across this a article where a Republican used the word uppity when referring to Obama. Once again I was surprised that that could have some racist reference to it.

I think its rather riduclous that one would get offended if coondhound was mentioned when talking about there dog or something similar, same with "uppity" when in the context of what has meant to me. People are just too sensitive these days.

I was wondering what those words mean to people here and maybe give me some history on it

Looking at it the way things have been, its been more like several kinds of rotten apples. As time has come and gone, the rot has spread to those that were not rotten before.

I'm from the Southern U.S. and I have family in the Deep South, and while I've been told that '#######' could be used as a derogatory word for black people, I've never actually heard it used with that meaning. Primarily, '#######' is simply short for a raccoon. 'Round these here parts, coonhound is the name of a breed of scent hound who, as the name suggests, were bred to hunt raccoon, along with opossums and other similar pests. Just because it has the word '#######' in it doesn't make it a derogatory word, unless you're overly sensitive. I've actually never met a black person who didn't use the word '#######' themself in reference to the sneaky little critter.

Besides, if 'coonhound' does get your panties in a twist, so should words like 'blackboard' (as already mentioned) and black pepper, ect.

"Hussein" taking office has nothing to do with it. You seem to forget or perhaps were never aware of the struggle of Black Americans in history. We're talking about 400 years of slavery, Frederick Douglas and the abolitionist movement, Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad, the Mexican American War and the Compromise of 1850, Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, Dred Scott, Civil War, The Emancipation Proclamation, Jim Crow and the KKK in the south, 14th Amendment ratified, NAACP, Marcus Garvey, Jackie Robinson, integration of the Military in 1948, Malcolm X, Brown vs. Board of Education, Emmett Till murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership, SNCC founded, Freedom Riders, James Meredith and the University of Mississippi, The March on Washington and the "I Have a Dream" speech, George Wallace and the University of Alabama, BOMB at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, LBJ and the Civil Rights act, Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerne murdered by the KKK of registering Black voters, Malcolm X assassinated, Black Panther Party founded, Thurgood Marshall, Loving vs. Virginia and on and on and on and on. Thousand of people died so that Hussein could take office. Seems silly doesn't it? All that killing and murdering and bullshit because some people have darker skin than you. But regardless, it was a sweet ###### day when Hussein took office.

As far as the whole "coonhound" thing. Well, I'm not sure if it's a recognized official breed but there are dogs that are bread to hunt vermin, hounds being the best hunting dogs. However, some dogs were also trained to hunt for Black people in the South, as Shad and Dani laughed at. So "coonhound" could be racist if it is the name of a type of dog that is used to hunt Black people since "#######" is also a derogatory word used to describe Blacks. My guess is that you and your cousin were not describing a dog that hunts Black people but racoons and in that case it is not racist, but it can be.

And redbone is not historically racists since it's a term that was used mostly by Black people to describe their own that had both "white" and "black" genetic characteristics.

Yes, they are a recognized breed. Multiple individual breeds of coonhounds exist as well - redbone being one of them.

"#######" isn't used to refer to a coonhound, but to what a coonhound hunts, i.e., a racoon.
