HOUSEHOLDERS would be charged for each flush under a radical new toilet tax designed to help beat the drought.

The scheme would replace the current system, which sees sewage charges based on a home's value - not its waste water output.

CSIRO Policy and Economic Research Unit member Jim McColl and Adelaide University Water Management Professor Mike Young plan to promote the move to state and federal politicians and experts across the country.

"It would encourage people to reduce their sewage output by taking shorter showers, recycling washing machine water or connecting rainwater tanks to internal plumbingto reduce their charges,'' Professor Young said.

"Some people may go as far as not flushing their toilet as often because the less sewage you produce, the less sewage rate you pay.''

"People have been frightened to talk about sewage because it is yucky stuff, but it is critically important to address it, as part of the whole water cycle,'' he said.

"We are looking at reforming the way sewage is priced and this plan will drive interest in the different ways water is used throughout Australia.''

Thats shitty.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Add some draconian fines for "too much $hit" and it'll be perfect.

Well, I remember when the toilet was used to dispense a lot things besides fecal matter. They have these new toilets with two different flush buttons ...one for light and one for the heavy loads.

I'm sure it will be here soon  I remember when Tom Bradley was the Mayor of L.A. he had a saying, it it's yellow let it mellow but if it's brown flush it down

We have that - there's one flush for liquid waste and another for solid. I find it a hassle personally.

I've noticed quite a few establishments that have the no-flush urinals. Every one I've used looked clean and didn't smell.

Common here to charge for sewage at about six times the rate of water meter usage, can add up big time if you water your lawn. Just recently, are permitted to pay for and install a separate sewage meter, but hardly worth the expense unless you water your lawn a lot or wash cars in your driveway.

Want to move back into the country with my own well and sewage system, paying around 50 bucks a month now for water and sewage. People living out of town not wanting to pay extra for a mound system had a holding tank installed, but were emptying at night using a sump pump. About ten years ago a law was passed where a water meter had to be installed in these homes with receipts shown their tanks were legally collected and disposed of. Which happened to be the cities sewage disposal system at three times the rate. Don't know why they had to have water meters installed, that odor really gave them away.

EPA requires the cities to purify the sewage water clean enough to drink and put back into the rivers, the solids are processed and sold as fertilizer.
