Hi all,

Once my green card goes through i am thinking of joining Berkley College to study for some credits before i can transfer to a state school. My question is, as a legal permanent resident, will i be entitled to loan for college, financial aid? And how do i go about getting them?

Go to the Financial Aid Office at the College and ask them how to apply for financial aid. Do this at least 6 months before you want to start classes as it is a long process.

You are not "entitled" to anything since college tuition is not funded by the government as it is in many other countries. We pay our own tuition here.

A non-citizen who is a legal permanent resident is eligible for federal funds such as loans, grants, etc.

Here is an excerpt from the FAFSA's site on who's eligible:

To receive federal student aid, you must meet certain requirements. You must:

* Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.

* Have a valid Social Security Number (unless you’re from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, or the Republic of Palau).

* Be registered with Selective Service if you are male and 18 to 25 years of age (go to www.sss.gov for more information).

* Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate or pass an exam approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

* Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program at a school that participates in the federal student aid programs.

* Not have a drug conviction for an offense that occurred while you were receiving federal student aid (such as grants, loans, or work-study).

My daughter (Permanent Resident) receives student loans. We have to fill out the FAFSA each year in order to qualify. For the university she goes to, the FAFSA had to be filled out by Feb. 15th. The amount you receive will depend on your family income. You may even qualify for grants (which don't have to be paid back) if you family income is low enough. Loans can either be subsidized (no interest charged while in school and during grace period after graduation) or unsubsidized (interest is charged while in school and during grace period). The interest rate is quite low (6.5% or there abouts).

The FAFSA website is an excellent place to start.

Damn, selective service is a must?

When you filed your AOS application, USCIS transfered your information to SSS to get registered. This what happened to my case. I received a letter from SSS that I was registered and my name was in their system. If you haven't received anythig from SSS, you can go to your nearest MVD and get registered.

this 6.5 % interest , will this take effect on the day u have the loan? I am interested to continue my MA this fall . I am currently studying .. no job yet.. I am wondering how much income they will allow for the loan. Thank you.
