Actually, Alienlovechild, I think the point AJ is trying to make is according to that list there are many more VJ'ers from the Appalachian area than we thought. Something you stated in the other thread regarding this topic was there weren't any people from that area here on VJ. When in all reality, there are plenty of us on here.

Before I raised the issue, no one from the region claimed they were from the area nor commented as "insiders". I was trying to get a somebody to counter the ABC show from their own perspective. I wasn't born here but now live in the piedmont and I was trying to clarify that entire region isn't as bad as the TV show (which I didn't see) probably makes it out to be.

Well, I didn't see it either. So I can't comment on it. The area I live in is not as bad as others. But there are worse areas here than where I live too. You can drive just 10 miles down the road and see, basically, shacks people use as houses. There aren't jobs upon jobs available here. We do what we can with what we have. Lots of people get government help and lots of people grow their on gardens just so they'll have food. I can't vouch for all the areas just the one I live in.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

21 years in Allegheny County, baby. Mom, dad, and two of my sisters still live there. I wouldn't really call the Pittsburgh suburbs Appalachia though, more just close enough to it. I do have an uncle who used to be a coal miner.

I'd like to be able to grow food in a garden but we have stupid sand everywhere here, not dirt. Going to your yard for tomatoes, etc, would seem so cool. Oh yeah-another problem...I'm too lazy to actually take care of a real garden. Suj waters our flowers here, and plants them.

 Last year was the first year we had a garden. I had one as a child but hadn't since I was old enough to have one for myself. Javi had never had one. We loved it. I'm still using vegetables from it. I just put them in the freezer to use for later. We also have several blueberry and blackberry bushes so I have those as well. Javi has already cleared off more land for us to have an even bigger garden this year. I won't be able to help though since I'll be about to pop by then. But last year it was a joint effort. I'll actually miss not being able to be out there helping him this year.

Plant some fruit trees! The only thing that is a pain is the AMOUNT of fruit you get. My smallish tree had around 300 picked fruits off of it - and a few dozen more we couldnt reach. We would give them away to friends & family and anyone who would take them really. But it was awesome to go in the backyard and grab your breakfast!

Or zucchini. They take over the neighborhood.

The old homestead, complete with Utility Worker, who's apparently trying to figure out the quickest route out of dodge too:

My Mom and Step Father did a complete remodeling job after my Sister and I moved out. It looks a lot better today than it did back then. My Step Father sold it after my Mom died.

Oh, Washington county, Maryland. Looks like I did and didn't even realize it. Or chose not to think about it too hard. I lived in Hagerstown. It actually wasn't a bad little town. Not very easy to find a job there but cost of living was pretty damn cheap.

Real love stories never have endings...
