Passport expiring question...

We are about to file the papers for the K1 visa. I just saw my g/f's passport and it will expire in June of 2010.

Do you recommend we try to get her a new passport immediately? I read the passport has to be valid for 6 months prior to entering the US. What would happen if we got the new one now and the interview happened to be in less than 6 months, any issues?

If the passport expires after she enters the US can she get it renewed from the Indonesian Embassy in the US?

We have to go to Singapore in March and i'm a bit worried if she gets a new passport now, then singapore might give us a problem with a new passport.

This depends on the embassy, but my (now) wife faced a similar situation. She renewed her passport and didn't have it by the time she got packet 3. The embassy said they'd have the interview, and then just schedule a follow-up when the passport is ready to issue the visa (assuming the visa is approved)

You might want to contact your embassy to be sure, but I'm guessing they all handle it similarly.

Yes, renew the passport. Yes, you can renew a passport through an Embassy or Consulate.

She may be able to get away with not renewing her passport since the K1 should average about 6-7 months before the interview date, depending on the circumstances and bumps along the way. Even if you didn't have an interview until November of this year, her passport would still have 7 months left on it. However, I wouldn't really take the risk because I'm not sure what the policy is on travelling with a visa that's on an expired passport. It's probably best to have the visa put on a 'brand new passport' just to be safe

Keep in mind, though, that (depending on the country), renewing the passport while residing in the USA might be a REAL pain in the backside. Long-term, it might be easiest to renew now, even if you can squeak by with a K-1

I imagine it's country dependent, but she may not be able to get it renewed that far in advance. I say this because my wife, who is a Chinese citizen, just came back from a trip to China. Her passport expires in November of 2009. I reminded her to have her passport renewed while she was there. She was told that she could not have it renewed more than 6 months before the expiration date. The government officials told her she could not renew it before May.
