If the teacher doesn't have a criminal record (as most don't) and keeps their personal life entirely separate from their professional life (as many do), there's no reason why a religious school shouldn't/couldn't hire them.

I mean would you prefer that your children be taught by a less well qualified teacher, just because you don't like what you imagine the teacher might get up to when they're off work? It has no bearing (absolutely none) on their job performance whatsoever.

A qualified teacher is a qualified teacher - surely that's all there is to it.

But certainly to Pedroh's point its difficult to imagine why someone would purposefully apply for a job in an environment where they aren't welcome. Surely its the school's loss if they want to prostitute educational standards in favor of abitrary codes of conduct relating to something that's none of their business.

I'm sure there are many gay teachers and other professionals who keep their professional life separate from their private life.. and a lot of homophobes don't even realize it

I agree. On professionals who act like professionals. Women aren't usually bothered by Male Gynos or Obstetricians or Men with Female Urologists. Why do people feel that Gay people cannot be professionals too. I did not realize that my Ob/Gyn was Lesbian until 11 years later. Even if my gaydar would have been working it would not have bothered me one bit.

Maybe I should have titled this the new digital democracy? Anyways on the subject of gay rights they are still struggling for equal rights and until that day I can't say the US is equal. But with a Black President in office now I can say it has become more equal.

My older brother says he's going to request his FBI profile using the FOIA form I posted. Anyone else?

So you are suggesting a "don't ask don't tell" policy for places that would object to transgendered people.

Sounds like you want these folks to deny being

who they want to be.

Tsk Tsk.

You're not going to get the Gold star from the Liberal crowd talking like that PD.

there's a difference in denying their preferences and keeping privacy.. being gay doesn't mean they have to yell it all around, even straight people, specially in schools, are very private about their lives (exceptions of course of some dumb ones)..

I'm saying that everyone has a right to privacy when it comes applying for and performing a job.

I don't know about you - but coming into work and proclaiming "Goddamn! I had me some great sex last night!" isn't exactly the height of professionalism.

That is such a creepy question I know. I guess shipping costs.

Fail to see the difference between a person that has heterosexual or homosexual tendencies has to do with the classroom when no sexual contact or discussion is permitted either way. In trusting your school, what difference does it make if say, a male teacher fondles your daughter or your son, equal damage is done.

Learned later on that one of my favorite teachers in high school, a male, was homosexual, was a very good teacher and he never tried to stick his thing up my butt, still have fond memories of him. But don't even want to think about his personal life style. But had teachers that I hated and still do, just there to make a buck.

I would imagine most teachers are professional enough to separate their personal and private lives.

We use to think the same way about a priest the same way 50 years ago. Would you feel comfortable having a gay gym coach handing out towels in the shower room . Checking out your son or daughter a few times a week.

So the simple fact of being homosexual would make gay teachers more likely to "check out" the kids?

In other words - gay teachers are gay first and teachers second (or they only choose that occupation so they can perv on kids in the changing rooms). Wow - did you even read that before you posted it?

Why would gay issues be the foremost concern for the WH webpage? This thread is a disaster and those who want to talk about gay rights should get another thread.

Ok, I'll be equally moronic by commenting here. I'm pretty sure they were gay before they were teachers. A lot people who prey on kids choose professions where they can get power over and access to kids .

Did you actually click the link that Olivia provided? That Danno chose to investigate that particular issue is up to him and has nothing to do with what the website at all. It is certainly not the first thing you find when you go to the website. I guess you are boycotting looking because it comes from the 'evil' Obama administration and you might be contaminated. Rather in the same way that some people fear homosexuality.

As for your moronic comment. You are right, it is. When people say they are 'X professional first' it's not a time line!

A sexual predator is no more likely to be gay than straight, I suspect that the proportions are in line with the % of gays to straights in the whole of society so that comment is pointless.

Anyway, back to Olivia :)

I listened to an NPR program on this - I know, too much NPR but still. Anyway, I did agree with the concerns raised re journalistic professionalism and whether this is true transparency or just a way for the WH to broadcast their own agenda. Be that as it may, I do think that being able to access information in this way is a giant step in the right direction.

Why do I feel like I am drawing attention to one point, yet the replies keep avoiding it?

Here, let me try one more time.

How do you hide the fact that you are transgender... when you apply for a job?

In this article you'll find that Obama is using more than the White House Web Page to stay in touch with the people and his view point on having a more in touch and transparent government through technology.

Obama refuses to surrender Blackberry

Jan 16 07:24 PM US/Eastern

Despite legal and security hurdles, president-elect Barack Obama says he has a plan to retain his beloved Blackberry once he moves into the White House next week. Interviewed by CNN Friday, Obama said the smartphone was among the tools that he would use to stay in touch with real Americans and avoid becoming trapped inside the presidential "bubble."

"I think we're going to be able to hang on to one of these. My working assumption, and this is not new, is that anything I write on an email could end up being on CNN," he said.

"So I make sure to think before I press 'send'," he said of his Blackberry, which was an ever-present fixture on his belt or in his hand on the campaign trail.

Obama did not divulge just how he will overcome legal constraints, given the requirement of the post-Watergate Presidential Records Act of 1978 to keep a record of every White House communication.

Nor did he say how he would persuade his Secret Service protectors that the Blackberry does not pose a security risk, for instance if it is hacked over the air.

But Obama, who succeeds the unpopular George W. Bush on Tuesday, said the phone was a valuable part of a wider strategy to escape the White House fishbowl.

"It's just one tool among a number of tools that I'm trying to use, to break out of the bubble, to make sure that people can still reach me," he said.

"If I'm doing something stupid, somebody in Chicago can send me an email and say, 'What are you doing?'

"I want to be able to have voices, other than the people who are immediately working for me, be able to reach out and send me a message about what's happening in America."

The mobile device dilemma may have inadvertently been solved on Friday, as Obama's Blackberry tumbled from his belt as he got out of his limousine and onto his plane in Washington.

A Secret Service agent hurried to pick up the pieces, gathering the Blackberry and battery off the frigid tarmac.
