PELOSI SAYS BIRTH CONTROL WILL HELP ECONOMY

Sun Jan 25 2009 22:13:43 ET

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi boldly defended a move to add birth control funding to the new economic "stimulus" package, claiming "contraception will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government."

...

The revelation came during an exchange Sunday morning on ABC's THIS WEEK.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus?

PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children's health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So no apologies for that?

PELOSI: No apologies. No. we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.

So, fewer eventual taxpayers to shoulder the burden of paying for the cost of government over-spending...good idea

What's next, adopting China's one-child policy?

Exactly.

Not only is that a retarded message to send, it misses the point of a stimulus entirely. The bill should have immediate-term, high-impact projects only. Not something that might help in 50 years (which fewer babies won't... that will hurt).

Funny logic... states are experiencing tough times and cutting services and jobs.... families have more hardship and fall into poverty. Once in poverty children are less likely to have solid education and more likely to "burden" state services with un-wanted pregnancy...

So we "stimulate" the economy by promoting preventive services instead of pro-active one.

We have a minority president, and it's the minorities that can't control their birth rates. Go figure!

Umm , wrong and just this side of racism... please!

truth behind what you are putting out there is socio economical .

its about education...

i agree with democratic' idea of throwing money at any percieved "problem" with out of control birth rates, in the form of availability and education on the matter of family planning , etc.

fact is life happens and sometimes it requires some help.

but it dont make sense for sense, and i completely agree that it sure makes it hard to get things done with the economy when you insert devisive issues like birth control into a stimulus plan that is supposed to be needed sooner rather than later.

but anyway,

being divided sucks!

They were saying exactly the opposite when both that Roe thing and the pill came out, fewer births, less purchasing of baby goods was hurting the economy, fewer homes built, less larger vehicles being sold, etc.

But I do agree with Nancy on this one, this would be a far better nation if her mom took the pill or had an abortion.

They have money for contraceptives, but not rail. This is a stimulus bill!

Though President Obama is begging Congress to pass a jobs-stimulus bill, U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, his fellow Chicago Democrat, says he's "leaning against" voting for the bill in its current form -- because it contains too little for transportation.

...

Downstate Transportation Committee members Aaron Shock, a Republican, and Phil Hare, a Democrat, agree with Lipinski that the transportation portion is too small.

"There's very little for mass transit and rail," said Hare, who wants an Amtrak line from Chicago to Des Moines, Iowa.

...

Lipinski said transportation spending will create more jobs more quickly than most parts of the current bill.

There's no "out-of-control" birth rate nationally. The U.S. is barely at the replacement rate. Ideally, it's not good fro public policy to have poor people have kids they can't support regardless of race. Also, most of population increase has come from immigration and everyone on this forum has a hand in that figure.
