In the blue menu bar at the top of the page...the word GUIDES is where to start. On the Guides page, look at the red writing that says Begin Here and you will find a good summary.

I'm assisting my sister in-law's new husband with filing the I-130 in the next few days. Even though my wife came on a K3 visa, things have changed enough, I'm recommending they stick with the CR1. There's lots of discussion here as to why. You'll have plenty of time to read and research that before you would be able to file the second petition, so take your time and carefully weigh the factors against your family priorities.

I originally applied forf K-3 but the way things are now KE and CR1 are about the same time and CR! is less expensive and has a lot more advantages! I would go for the CR1!

Good luck on your journey,

Go with the CR 1 unless you have compelling circumstances to do otherwise. You will avoid multiple hassles and extra expense. In the kids case the K- 3 was only better because my son can now qualify to sponsor his wife on his own and he doesn't have to ask us to sign on for ten years. A K-3 can be better for couples who don't really know where they want to live and just want to be together while they figure it all out. It can be really hard to obtain a visitor's visa coming from some countries. It also can be beneficial for those who have children that are following to join.
