However...How does anyone prepare for a regular wedding when you don't know the wedding date because you have no clue when the visa will be granted?

Anyone been through this or going through this that has tips for us yet to be marrieds who are not only fretting on Visas but also fretting on how to have the Wedding of our dreams??

Once you (or your fiance, not sure who is the USC here) receive the visa, you then have 6 months before the foreign fiance must enter the US. Also once the foreign fiance enters, you have 90 days in which to marry. Use one of those time spans to plan.

Putting down deposits at locations and etc. to hold a certain date is likely just going to be wasted money. There's just no way to guarantee that you'll get the visa in time for your date.

We talked to a couple of vendors (wedding/reception site, photographer/videographer) and told them what was going on with us and immigration. They were pretty good about working with us and being flexible about the possibility of changing dates, etc. If you go and have chats with them, it'll help to see if they are willing to work with you. :)

The other option many here on VJ take is to have a quick legal ceremony after the fiance arrives, and then take time to plan a larger/more formal reception/renewal of vows later. That's the path we took. Still haven't had the ceremony yet, but ah, on day.

I guess we are kinda brave then..lol

My fiance and I are planning something like a "non-legal" ceremony here in Germany and then I HOPE I already have the visa by then and can just fly to the States with him.

There we will have the legal wedding once I get there.

He wanted to come here for a visit before I leave Germany and my parents were kinda bugging me about a wedding they can attend as well, so we decided to just set a date, no matter what.

If I don't have the visa by then, I will have to stay here for a little longer, but I hope we planned it in a reasonable time so I will have my visa by then.

Yea, it's tricky, but I am hoping for the best and so far, we are more than in time...

I hope, you can figure something out!!

I've got my flowers made and ready to go, have a few decorations for the reception and the music. As long as it is taken him to get the visa, we might just have a ceremony in the backyard since it will be next to impossible to reserve a location. Oh....and I do have a nice backyard. :D

That is very true. :) We did this as well and everyone was very understanding and very flexible. I researched lots of stuff before hand and We already had an idea of what we wanted to do. So we had everything planned pretty much so that when the time came for k-1 interview I pretty much thought I would get it so we went ahead and booked everything in about a month before my interview so I had time to get invitations out before I left. Everything ended up turning out really well and we had about 2 months to get everything finalized when I came to the states before the actual wedding. While I was at home we had boughten all decorations and made party favors while waiting on interview date so that I wouldn't have to worry about those things later. Don't worry, there are a lot of options, so it's really whatever works out best fort he both of you :). And before I left home, we didn't have like a wedding ceremony but My family and friends threw a huge bbq/goodbye/bridal party type thing for my and my hubby before we left. We ended up getting alot of gifts then and such from ppl who wouldn't be able to make it. My parents just ended up bringing it all down with them when they came for the actual wedding. :) Best of luck to you

We did a small church ceremony in February and had our BIG one last weekend! :)

Having the small ceremony first, elegant as it was, did not in any way diminish the spectacular and wonderful nature of the day. Everyone had a great time and the day was just as perfect as if we had done it that way first!
