Attention Women: You Can Sniff Out a Man’s Sexual Intentions

Think he’s just not that into you? Turns out you can figure it out from his smell—more specifically, through the subconscious signals he’s sending out through pheromones in his sweat. The researchers found that a man’s scent is different when he’s sexually aroused than when he’s not—and women can tell the difference. Psychologist Denise Chen at Rice University asked 20 heterosexual men to refrain from using deodorant and scent-free shampoo and soap when showering. The men were then asked to watch videos showing “sexual intercourse between heterosexual couples” for 20 minutes. The researchers put pads in the subjects’ armpits to collect their sweat, and hooked the men up to electrodes to measure their sexual excitement. Then the men were asked to collect their sweat while they watched educational documentaries, so the female sniffers could compare.

The researchers then hooked 19 girls up to brain scans and asked each of them to smell the pads and describe the sweat as floral, sweaty/human, other, and no smell. The girls couldn’t distinguish between sexual sweat and neural sweat, further suggesting that the sexual sweat is subconscious. But their brain scans showed something different:

As Live Science reports, “the sexual sweat, but not the normal sweat, activated the right orbitofrontal cortex and the right fusiform cortex, brain areas that help us recognize emotions and perceive things, respectively.”

So there you have it. And if you still don’t trust your pheromone smell? Then try squirting the hormone oxytocin into your nose.

totaly agree. a lot of our interactions r smell driven, just not as conscious as say visual or hearing. even the weird way women that live together tend to have their period same time of the month was proven to be based on smell.

Sex Life

Like their relatives (slugs) Garden Snails are hermaphrodites. This means that are both fully functional males and fully functional females. An individual snail cannot fertilise itself, so it needs to find a partner – but anyone will do! They exchange sperm with this partner and then use the received sperm to fertilise their own eggs inside their body. Eggs are laid in the soil and hatch as very small snails which take a couple of years to reach maturity. The courtship is bizarre to say the least.

Love Darts

An important part of the courtship of snails involves the exchange of ‘Love Darts’. After a period of mutual stroking, twining and generally crawling all over one-another the excited snails hurl chalky darts into their partner’s head. (These darts are about half an inch long – but that’s big if you are a snail.) At one time it was thought that the ‘gift’ of Calcium Carbonate helped the partner form eggs, but it now looks as if the mucus covering of the ‘Love Dart’ is more important. Research has shown that chemicals in this mucus covering increase reproductive success, probably protecting the exchanged sperm in some way.
