I've never met a single person who wasn't from the U.S. describe themselves as Americans.

When I was in Cancun with some friends many years ago, a taxi driver referred to a church outside Cancun as the first church with something-and-something (I wasn't paying attention) in America. One of my friends jumped at that.. what do you mean? This was part of America once? The taxi driver goes, this is America. America isn't just the US it's the whole region.

Oh and btw, there are people on this site who aren't from the U.S. but do call themselves Americans. I've been flamed by one, I remember.

Agreed brother.

For clarification, the taxi driver said that, not me.

My personal opinion on it is, I recognize that (some?) people south of the border call themselves Americans. Those people, when they move here, oughta recognize that the word means something different up here. Why flame us for using a word the way we always have? The meaning of words do change over time and from region to region, this is not unique to America.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

I don't flame you, I couldn't care less - you can call yourself whatever you want. America is still the name of a Continent for me;but I see your point.

South Americans call themselves American too.

It does get confusing...

Hee, hee!

Personally as someone not born in the U.S. the proud-stick-out-your-chest-way-of-sayng-"i'm-an-american" just gets to me.

I guess it is because it is just shorter and easier than saying "I'm from the U.S.". Who knows...

Did you know that too many people here cannot name a country that starts with the letter "U"?

Perhaps this is why almost all USian websites (with a form to fill out) puts United States of America it on the top of the list of countries....even though it does not start with an "A".

Hahaha....a tiny bit sorry for this hijack...

You must get offended by a lot by people across the Americas using the American label. I don't get pissed when people tell me what their nationality is. If their they are proud of their country no problem. Every nation has some claim to fame.

Dang, not on this American subject again, blame Katharine Lee Bates for the use of this word.

United States the Beautiful
Words by Katharine Lee Bates,

Melody by Samuel Ward

MIDI sequencing provided by Melody Lane O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

United States, United States!

God shed his grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

Try singing this aloud using United States, United States! Doesn't sound half bad.

But looking at my last buck, we are, "The United States of America", actually also on my last five, ten, twenty, fifty, and hundred buck as well. Prefer using our currency as the true name of our country as it is the most valuable passport we have, if you have enough of it. Like beating a murder charge, ask OJ, or becoming president, ask Carl Rove, or even becoming a judge, mayor, or any other political office. Well, besides money, also helps to have a good line of BS.

Getting back to the original post, don't ask what your country can do for you, but ask, what is your country doing to you? Like sending your job overseas.
