I was reading in the daily thread about some holiday today that signifies the coming of the three wise men on camels. That reminded me about Christmas in Egypt and how they celebrate on Jan. 7th. It's almost 3 am there so Merry Christmas in Egypt!

Christmas Pyramids to signify the event each year.

When it was announced by Mubarak that Jan. 7th would be recognized as Christmas in Egypt I wondered why that was. Then after reading about Three Kings Day in Christianity I wonder if the Orthodox Christians in Egypt celebrate that and that was the reason for the placement of the day of Christmas in Egypt?

Orthodox Christmas (regardless of Mubarak's annoucement) has always been January 7th... (my b-day too...) I don't know exactly why the different dates between western and eastern Christmas, but I can't help but wonder if it has to do with the ME tradition of celebrating the birth of a baby a week or so after the birth. (Isbooa?) I understand that because of high infant mortality rates in the past (and maybe the fear of the evil eye?) that babies births were not celebrated until they were a week old, at which time everyone visits and brings gifts...(the wise men brought gifts a while after the birth...) It's an ancient Egyptian tradition, predating Islam, and quite a wild and NOISY event (to Westerners observing a traditional Isbooa for the first time...).

Poor H was clueless about the Dec 25th significance when it rolled around 2 weeks ago! He said that they say "Merry Christmas" in Egypt to westerners on Dec 31st!!!!! And of course the Egyptian Christmas is the 7th of January... (OH OF COURSE!!!! ;)

Don't we have any Copts on this group who can help us learn about the significance of Jan 7th? I am pretty certain this day is celebrated in Latin America as well... I'll see what I can find out...

This is my first Jan 7 in the USA for 3 years.... I can't believe we don't have snow... Have you got some in Idaho??? If so, I'm coming over... :)

Happy Birthday Karamella. It's also my late Grandpa's Birthday as well. He died just after I was born.

So that is what Waleed meant when he was talking to me about celebrating it a week later. Interesting point about the Moroccan's. I was thinking the same thing about some parts of latin america because of what stashi said in the daily thread. Curious and more curious.

Merry Christmas in Egypt !!!!!!!!!

Nothing's impossible . Nothing's unreachable .When I am weary you make me stronger

This love is beautiful .So unforgettable . I feel no winter cold when we are together .

Will you stand by me ?!!!Hold on and never let me go .

Will you stand by me?!! With you i know i belong . When the story gets told .

When day turns into night .I look into your eyes . I see my future now .All the world and its wonder

This love wont fade away. And through the hardest days . I will never question us .You are the reason my only reason.

I'm blessed to find what i need in a world loosing hope. you are my only believe .

You make things right every time after time.....

Will you stand by me ?!!!

I love you so much and i miss you so much more .

Thanks staashi and tasha! I actually am not thrilled how the pictures turned out. He was running a fever that day and was so crabby. We didn't get any of the nice big smiles were use to. Oh well, there is always next time.

I really wasn't thrilled with ours either. Malek smiles well but I hated their props they used. Next time we are going somewhere else. Zaid looks good even with a fever he smiles very handsome.

Thanks Staashi...Malek is really starting to look more mature these days and less baby like. It makes me sad....just wait...another year and you will be saying the same thing!
