I suppose it depends where you go when eating out. I can imagine some places you can get a meal for two at or around $30, but you'd need to be exceptionally frugal to do so. In any event, I'd recommend going out to dinner less often and when you do go out, you can splurge a little. Why bother eating out at someplace that serves only so-so food? That seems like a waste of money to me. Cook dinner at home most of the time and when you do go out, you'll have some money stored up to go somewhere really nice.

The thing I'm most amazed at, however, is the concept you can "buy a lot of groceries" for $30 or so. I don't know what you're getting, but while my wife and I aren't rich, the grocery bill usually comes out to least twice that. Usually more. Of course, we purchase more at one time so we don't have to go grocery shopping every week (if we can avoid it).

the thing most of you are not understanding is when we as in my hubby and I are going to Applebees or TGI's, we don't think it is so-so food so we don't think it is a waste of money.... like many people have said the price of the food doesn't really determine the quality of the food...... and yeah not everything we have had there is terrific but we have our favourite things we like to eat at those places...

I am not saying you could buy a lot of groceries for 30 dollars but you could buy food for a few meals with 30 dollars... at least I could...

If you just get the basics - $30 can go a long way... Lentils, rice, beans, fresh veg.

Once you start buying breakfast cereals or processed, packaged stuff the grocery bill goes way up.

I buy a mix of prepackaged stuff, like canned sauces etc.. and fresh stuff... the grocery store i go too has good prices too... if I were to shop at Albertsons or Vons my bill would at least be doubled...

I miss Albertsons. The CA grocery stores chains $hit all over the NJ ones. Even at the "Good" one we go to, its still a job rooting through the apples and bell peppers looking for things that aren't beaten to hell.

I have tried a bunch of stores here and now I shop at Food4Less... I like it, it has everything I need and for lower prices.
