Hello fellow Canadians,

My fiance and I just got engaged on December 30 and I am planning to move to the USA. I stumbled upon this website when looking for immigration information. What a wealth of information!

I look forward to starting this adventure and I'm sure I will use this website and the discussion boards quite often. Any advice is appreciated :)

Yes I have started reading the guides :P

Dear Peachey,

Yes, another welcome.

Here is one piece of advice that maybe every one will echo:

you will go insane waiting to be with your sweetie as time seems to stretch to infinity, as this process goes on.

If you know this ahead of time and you prepare for the onslaught of emotional madness, you will do great! :D

If you have idle time, try to fill it with planning and projects.

Good luck and may your journey be a smooth one.

:star:

SpiritAlight edits due to extreme lack of typing abilities. :)

You will do foolish things.

Do them with enthusiasm!!

Don't just do something. Sit there.

Hi Peachey,

Welcome to VJ, Peachey! Congratulations on your recent engagement too. There is definitely a lot to read about, discuss, and learn here on VJ, and yes, there are definitely a lot of friendly and helpful people on this website too! Don't worry, you'll get the hang of all of this, even though it can be overwhelming at times....

As for any advice or suggestions..hmm...Well, you've started at a good place, by posting on the Canadian boards. Lol...just don't mind us Canadians getting a little bit off-topic and silly at times...

Besides the Canadian boards, you can also start by checking out the boards for your specific visa type. For example, you can start by going on the K1 boards, and find others who are in the same specific immigration situation as you are too (and then obsess about it while you wait..lol...). And if you're up to it, you can also check out other non-serious and fun topics/boards here on VJ as well.

As well, remember to..:time:, as that's helpful overall on VJ too!

Have fun and enjoy the rest of your adventure here on VJ!...and yes, it's going to be a long, stressful, and frustrating process, as you will find out soon enough....But with the help of VJ, it sure will be a lot more easier and a lot more fun on this journey, indeed!

Hope this helps! Good luck too on the rest of your immigration journey!

vvvvvvvvvvvelcome my dear! Feel free to say whatever you want and we will always have a listening ear. We have all been through some tough stuff so we understand some of the things that may be happening in your future. Welcome!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Welcome to VJ!

My advise would be the same as the others...do the research on the visa types and along with asking questions here in the Canada forum, dont be afraid to post in the specific visa forums as well - people there are also very knowledgable :)

Congrats on your engagement, I hope whichever you decided, that the process goes well for you. I can't say it's an easy time, to wait all those months, but it's so worth it. I thought I would lose it there a couple times, but I made it, and talking to people who are going through the process at the same time, or who have gone through it already are really nice to talk to. Like Spirit said, if you can keep yourself busy, the time will pass much quicker :)

Welcome to VJ. I collect the $5 from every new member. Just PM me and i will pass along my mailing address!

We look forward to answering questions from "can I visit the USA" "Does my Cdn credit transfer to the USA" And our all time favorite question "Where do I get a police check completed at?" lol But I see you have already read the guides, so ur ahead of the game, lol! welcome to VJ, were a tame bunch here in the Cdn forum. Not so tame in the "off topic" forum, you will be amazed on what some people say!! Welcome

P.s. if your a Leafs fan, the dues are waived, as you probably could use the $$ to put towards a crying towel, as another disappointing season lingers on!! Go Flames Go!!

Edited by flames9

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
