Simple question about EAD....

Is your EAD a valid ID?

I'm not really comfortable having to carry my dutch passport all of the time.

It's not a very convenient size and I'm afraid I might lose/damage it.

My EAD is credit card size and fits in my wallet.

Slightly related....James tried to use his English Driving License here a few years ago to buy cigarrettes and the girl at the gas station thought it was a fake! I think she wasn't very bright though....I mean, seriously, if he was gonna fake a license he would do a US one! I tried to buy them then and she said she wouldn't sell them too me since she knew I'd give them to him!

Tobester,

Valid ID for what purpose?

Yodrak

he is asking about things like,

for writing checks or using a debit card

for buying cigarettes or alcohol

for basically anytime someone just asks for an ID

he doesnt have a drivers license yet, so he was wondering if his EAD would work for these things

thanks everyone for your responses

keltic,

Then the answer is - it's up to the person who's requesting to see some ID. If they trust what they see (or don't really care), they'll accept it. If they're really concientious and aren't familiar with or don't trust what they're shown, then they may not accept it.

I was wondrering about this one too. Would it work for, say, air travel. Anyone tried?

09-02-2005 Applications for AOS, EAD, and AP received by MSC

10-21-2005 AOS fingerprint notice for 12-08-2005

11-07-2005 AP approved

12-05-2005 Infopass appt at San Jose office for interim EAD -- Refused, because it is already approved by MSC on 11-07-2005

12-07-2005 Attempt at interim EAD at San Francisco office -- no go. Back to San Jose, where CSO (chief station officer) tells they will contact MSC via email to request permission to issue interim EAD

12-08-2005 Biometrics for AOS and EAD. Having no EAD appt letter was no problem (used EAD NOA)

12-15-2005 EAD arrived in the mail

12-24-2005 Received interview letter; interview scheduled 03-01-2006

01-28-2006 Received replacement SSN card in married name (5 wks since application)

I've used it as an ID before, people seem to trust the big stamp on it.

Before that, I've tried using my Belgian embassy issued ID but usually they'd ask for something else so I did carry my passport around.
