Read the Gulag Archipelago, by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

Trust me. You won't forgive Stalin after you read it.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Right next to Hitler?

And that is the crux of the original post. Russians turn a blind eye and look at Stalin through rose colored glasses. Stalin and the Russians themselves killed millions of their own Slavic people, but the German Nazis are reviled for doing the same thing to them? It reminds me of American blacks. They murder each other with abandon and the silence is deafening. But a white kills a black and all hell breaks loose.

Funny how people kill their own and never blink an eye, but when an outsider does the same thing it's like hitting a hornet's nest.

The world has been tribal since the beginning of time, but the naive and idealistic are oblivious to reality. I see it every day in America. I see it every day in the world.

Stalin may have killed more of his own people than the Germans did.

That fact is open to debate by historians. Just a quick glance I got from Wikipedia estimated Soviet deaths during the war at 26.6 million. In Belorussia roughly 25% of the population perished in the war as opposed to overall Soviet deaths of 15-16% of the population. Belorussia was the first to be invaded and one of the last Soviet republics to be liberated from the Nazis.

Estimates of Stalinist murder of Soviet peoples have been debated by historians to be anywhere from 8 to 62 million. Here is an interesting source that goes with the most extreme estimate:

In any event, Stalin is no hero or savior for the Soviet people IMO, but the Russians themselves can decide who their heroes are. My grandparents, mom, and aunts missed out on lots and lots of pure misery by living here in the USA while these things happened. That's a fact.

On a personal note, my mom and I were able to find our Belarussian relatives from my grandmother's side of the family. We were not able to find or even find out what happened to my grandfather's relatives. My grandfather and grandmother's parents lived in the same village before the war and knew each other's families for generations. My grandmother's people returned to the area after the war and even contacted my grandmother here in the USA after the war via letters. My grandfather never heard from his relatives again after the war. No one my mom or I asked during our Belarus visits knew what ever became of my grandfather's family either. They never returned to the area or contacted anyone. My guess is that they perished during the war. Who knows?
