Israel has shown a willingness to explore the limits of that question - whenever they locate someone they want they drop a bomb on the site, even if that person is standing in the middle of a crowded bazaar.

Except they don't do that. The Israeli army goes to great lengths to

avoid civilian casualties and, in many cases, have put their soldiers in

harm's way in the process.

One good example is the battle of Jenin of 2002, when 20 or so Israeli

soldiers were ambushed and killed, Israel's greatest combat loss in years.

They could have bombed the ####### out of that place instead of sending

soldiers in to be slaughtered but they didn't.

They also tried to blow up Yasser Arafat in the early 1980's and killed approx 200 people.

There's also these gems to consider:

Salah Mustafa Muhammad Shahade (1953–2002) - leader of the Ezzedeen-al-qassam brigades, the military wing of terrorist Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

On July 22, 2002, the Israeli Defense Forces targeted the building in which Shahade was hiding using a 2,205-pound bomb dropped by a F-16 plane that destroyed many houses in a densely populated neighborhood of Gaza City. As a result, 15 people were killed, including Shahade, his wife and 9 children. In addition to the building which was directly targeted, nine other adjacent buildings were completely destroyed and 12 others were severely damaged. 150 people were hospitalized with injuries from the attack.

Sheikh Ahmed Ismail Yassin (1937 — March 22, 2004) was the co-founder and leader of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Organization Hamas.

Ahmed Yassin was killed in an Israeli attack on March 22, 2004. While he was being wheeled out of an early morning prayer session, an Israeli helicopter gunship fired Hellfire missiles at Yassin and both of his bodyguards. They were killed instantly, along with six other bystanders. Allegedly, more than a dozen people were injured in the operation, including two of Yassin's sons. Rantissi replaced him as Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, and Rantissi himself was assassinated by Israel on April 17, 2004.

If you happened to end up over there in the wrong place at the wrong time, that'd just about ###### up your day wouldn't it ;-)

But you don't know and neither do I. Its easy to write off the deaths of others as 'broken eggs', that just says to me that wannabe armchair generals have no concept of the value of human life.

So what? Its not your judgement to make. Or mine. Neither of us know those people or what went on enough to make an informed comment on that.

The issue here (specifically in situations of this type, not simply this one) is that someone makes a ethical choice that the lives of a few innocent bystanders are worth it to kill one person with a huge area of effect weapon. Unfortunately the people most affected by that decision don't have the luxury of making that choice.

To further make my point..... Al-Zarqawi and other Al-Qaeda members allegedly beheaded US military members and contracted truck drivers. A person wearing the uniform of the military force that's occupying your country IS A MILITARY TARGET!!! A civilian... while driving a truck full of supplies for the military force that's occupying your country IS A MILITARY TARGET!!! Beheading those personnel engaged in occupying your country IS A MILITARY ACTION!!!

Nıck Berg, from all information I have seen was a private contractor in the telecommunications field. In other words, ...like a lot of other people out there he was just trying to find a job. And how you arrived from that....to describing and portraying him as working for the military and dressed in military clothes.....is beyond me. I can not understand why people are even defending this guy....Zarqawi....a butcher and psychopath who tortured people and cut theır heads off. It`s amazıng to me............to see him even being defended......as well as other terrorists......... on this forum.

As I dont agree with you those people in the house were innocent they know who he was and knew that at anytime he could be attacked and killed by any means possible. What about the THOUSANDS of ppl Zarqwi killed werent they innocent? This is war and it is what it is. The dilemma is the same. Someone makes a decision that the lives of a few are inconsequential and can be sacrificed in order to achieve a military objective. Those people do not have a choice in the matter. Clearly. I'm simply saying that the decision itself is ethically unjustifiable.

Inevitably you end up at a point where you ask yourself "how many bystanders is it ok to maim and kill in order to take out one man. 50? 100?

Has anyone entertained the idea that the REAL target was al-Zarqawi's spiritual adviser, Sheik Abdel Rahman?

They have been tracking him for a long time, but you can't come out and say you targeted a spiritual adviser, so you just wait until the two are together, and take them both out.
