Hello... I was wondering do you have to be engaged before you file the I-129F?

The petitioner (my boyfriend) is saving up money for the ring.

Even down the line... when say I go to the interview... do we have to be engaged?

AOS/EAD/I-131:

NOA'S Received: March 19, 2010

RFE: March 25, 2010

Case transferred to CSC: April 19, 2010

Since it's a marriage visa, then yes, you have to have intent to marry. But no, you don't have to have a ring.

I know the embassy officer talked to Claudeth about being engaged. Claudeth did have her ring with her and pictures from our engagement party that he was very interested in. I have heard some having a difficult time because they weren't officially engaged.

What the others have said is true, being engaged doesn't necessarily mean you have a big, sparkly ring...just the intent to marry each other. Plenty of VJer have been approved for a K1 minus the ring. You will need to submit letters of intent to marry with your I-129f petition.

We filed before an "official" engagement with a ring. We wanted to get a head start and knew that we would be getting engaged within the next 6-8 months.

We filed in June and got officially engaged in November...

Like the others have said, you just have to sign a letter stating you have intent to marry.

I thought it might ruin the surprise, but in the end I was totally surprised at how he actually proposed! He had to get creative because I knew it was coming!

We never officially got engaged, neither one of us proposed to each other. We just knew we wanted to be together, plus Tom asking me to move to the US to be with him was kind of a bigger deal.

We were very similar to this, but before the interview kinda came up with an answer to the question, "When did you propose to her?" of "When did you get engaged?" so he wouldn't go blank. And the answer was, "We decided we wanted to be married sometime in January when I went to visit her. There wasn't a big formal proposal or engagement."

Many times actions speak louder than actual words....

YMMV

That's similar to what I'm going to say if asked.
