I guess it's because we cook beans in brazil instead of buying it in cans, having a pressure cooker is a must. It cooks in less than 30 min, while in a regular pot would take like 2.5 hours.

I don't get how that doen't fit the ''instant'' american lifestyle. If I'm home and I'm cooking, why would I want to use a slowcooker and cook for half a day if I can put in a pressure cooker and go make a salad or take a shower while cooking?

Yes, thats exactly what I thought too. Pressure cooker should be a part of American lifestyle. I've learnt to cook beans overnight now and they taste wonderful. Also cooking isn't much hassle with only me eating for now. Mum will want a pressure cooker and I don't have the heart to ask her to bring her own :P

i like to make doce de leite with the pressure cooker. I put a can of sweetened condensed milk and cover it with water, cook for 30 min and voila: caramel spread. yummy. U can also use that as cake filling.

I was exaggerating a little, more like the impression that it doesn't fit with the extreme idea of nuking everything, or prep times of ten minutes or less. I know you don't live like that -- probably most on VJ don't. But I do know there are families where the kids grow up learning to peel back the film or open the can and hit the button, and I think that does have some influence on what is sold in the stores. You do have to know what you're doing when you use a pressure cooker -- timing, how the sound changes, etc -- and if you've never seen one, it can be intimidating. If you do know what you're doing, it's a breeze. I agree, it does a wonder with beans, and used to love my mom's roast beef made in the pressure cooker.

Oooh, am going to use that next time I bake a cake, thanks for the recipe Nessa  (ofcourse, I just eat condensed milk straight out of the can right now, one of those weird cravings)

Waiting for husband to wake up and drag him to target :P

Cool! let me know if you get the kind you wanted and I will get one too (just too lazy to check for myself :) )

Would like to point out, there is a difference between a Preasure Cooker and a Rice Cooker. We have a rice cooker, which might look a little like a preasure cooker, but its not.

Good luck finding a preasure cooker!

I didn't understand why the electric kettle wasn't an essential tool in the American kitchen - but they generally don't make tea and refuse to understand the 1000 and one other uses for it :) However, I have found one, so all is cool, even if it is a tad slower than the ones I am used to using :)

A rice cooker isn't a pressure cooker though, surely?

Oops, snap with previous poster :)

Duh I guess I will just take a print out of this page and look for it.

Hubby is still sleeping, so may be later in the evening if he finally wakes up :P

In India I call it the same, pressure cooker or rice cooker, didn't really know there is a difference.

Why not buy one online? I have to say, I don't think I have seen any in Target, not around here anyway, loads of rice cookers, crockpots and the like, but not one pressure cooker...Good luck with your search. :)

I was thinking the same thing. I purchase a lot of things online and have been very lucky always getting what I want, and enjoying it. At least that way you are a little more confident you are getting exactly what you want.

As far a rice cookers and preassure cookers, MC and I wanted to point that out, because if you ask a sales clerk for a rice cooker, you will NOT be getting a preasure cooker! :)

Never tried a rice cooker. I do my rice in the microwave and comes out just fine (Daniel was a lot better at it though). More than any cookers I need a cook to take care of things to give me a break :crying:

(F) Sure hope your Daniel comes home soon! (F)
