I just arrived in US and am trying to fix things with our home out here. I am usually used to do pressure cooking because its much faster.

Anyways me and hubby went out yesterday looking for pressure cookers along with other stuff, we found everything and also got a cooker, only to find out that the cooker we found is a --slow cooker.

I did try to explain hubster about what I really want=== those whistling cookers. Does anyone know whats the term for it here in US? He says he never seen something like that but then all he ever cooked have been noodles, so if anyone can help me with that.

Thanks a bunch.

You should be able to find a pressure cooker pretty much anywhere they sell kitchen gadgets. WalMart may not be your best bet, but try Sears or a specialty kitchen shop.

Failing that, I've got one in my cupboard that I never use... ;)

You should also be able to find rice cookers in any of those types of stores. I've seen them all over the place recently. I used to have one, I hated cleaning it, so I perfer to just make it on the stove in a regular ol' pot.

I did say pressure cooker to the employee, may be when I go today(if I can get out in this cold) I will specifically ask for rice cooker or that term--canned.

Thanks again :)

Target has several - most are only on their web site, but a few are available in the store - I checked Evansville and there are at least 2 available at both Target stores. Target

Yep, pressure cooker  My mom used one a lot when I was a child, but I guess they've fallen out of fashion, and some younger store clerks may not know what they are. They take a little time to cook, and you have to keep an eye on them, so they don't mesh with some of the "instant" American lifestyle (put it in the microwave for six minutes, or throw it in the slow cooker while you're at work). My husband has wanted one as well -- his mom uses one all the time, and they do such a great job if you know how to use them. They make meat very tender. I had one somewhere, but I haven't seen it in a few moves, so I need to go ahead and buy (hubby) another. Have fun with your new toy! :star:

Oh, and rice cookers are something else entirely, but they are a nice thing to have. Pressure cooker or canner should get you what you want. I really would expect the box to say pressure cooker. Could you pull up a photo online and either print it or snap a camera phone picture to show the clerk?

I guess it's because we cook beans in brazil instead of buying it in cans, having a pressure cooker is a must. It cooks in less than 30 min, while in a regular pot would take like 2.5 hours.

I don't get how that doen't fit the ''instant'' american lifestyle. If I'm home and I'm cooking, why would I want to use a slowcooker and cook for half a day if I can put in a pressure cooker and go make a salad or take a shower while cooking?
