Yes, I would say that's your best bet - go visit her, spend time together there, see where you want to go from there. If you decide then that you want to get married for sure and pursue the K-1, great. In the meantime, I'd say she should look for work...the only reason I suggest that over going to school in Kenya is that basically none of my husband's classes that he had taken beyond high school (he had a couple of certificates, etc) counted for anything when he got to the US. If you're serious about eventually marrying and having her here, I think going to school here can be a better choice.

The thing about spending the money to go there is this: if she got the tourist visa, let's say, you'd be spending the money for her to come here to visit (same cost) and return to Kenya, and then possibly/hopefully another ticket in the future for her to move to the US later upon getting the K-1 or whatever. So really you aren't spending unnecessary money. Plus you get to see Kenya, which is an absolutely amazing country :) Bonus!

Hope that helps a bit. When you go, make sure to save EVERYTHING, so that if you do go for a K-1/CR-1 you have evidence for it later.

Thank you again for your time,,yea, she is searching for n job again, but u all know how hard that is. In the mean time trying to just give her the basics to keep going. The money to spend on getting there cant be n priority right now til she gets n job. The money for n fight and expenses are better off in her hands for the for now basics. We knew this was going to take years to do. And all i have read from VJ is how long and difficult it is. I know it will be worth it with patience, She is such an strong Woman and I do Love her. Congrats on your patience too. Sooo difficult..

Hi everyone,

I am happy to report that we are moving right along through the NVC stage for David's visa. Hoping to have a case complete by the end of the month/beginning of May. I know most of you were the K-1 visa route so you may not know the answer but I am going to ask anyway ;) I have researched those who recently had CR-1/IR-1 interviews scheduled and noticed that Nairobi has been scheduling the interview at least 3 months after case complete. If David's interview is scheduled that far away, is it possible to request a sooner date from the Embassy? Any suggestions as to how I should go about contacting them if I want to submit a request for a sooner date? I am getting impatient with this whole process and I really do not want to wait another 3 months for his interview. I miss him so much. Thanks to all in advance. Hope you all are well.

Emily, once the NVC schedules your interview with Nairobi, I believe the only thing you can do is email the Embassy and request an earlier date than the one already given. I believe that's all you can do. Emailing them is easier than calling because it's rare you would EVER get anyone from the Consular Section on the phone...I never had any luck with that (and it's even more difficult with the time difference). I know the wait for the interview is quite long - they seem to be getting longer these days. I'm sorry for that. Once it's scheduled, email them and see if anything can be done. I doubt it, but I will keep my fingers crossed for you because one never knows. Good luck and stay patient and strong, my friend. You're almost there :luv: Sorry if this posted twice, VJ website is acting up a bit, LOL.

Jill,

Thanks for the advice. I will keep you all posted as we move forward with the process. We seem so close to being finished now but then when I think about how long it may take to have the interview assigned then it feels like an eternity. I am trying to be patient and wait but I am anxious about all of it. David sent documents in the mail to me today from Kampala. Please pray that they arrive quickly and intact! (You all know how East African mail services are...)

Emily, I know how hard it is, trust me. CR-1 visa interviews do take a bit longer to schedule as they are done by the NVC - but, even K-1 interview wait times seem longer than they were a couple years ago. Just hang in there and know that you are almost there. Take joy and comfort in knowing that David will be home soon (F) Make sure he has everything he needs for the interview and that all your paperwork and relationship evidence is in order...you know the deal, LOL. Much love and stay strong, my friend, XO.

Hi everyone- My fiance has his interview on May 15th and we we've heard that it takes 2 weeks from approval to receipt of the passport/visa. So is it reasonable to expect that he would be able to leave Kenya by June 1st? We're trying to make plans and set a date for an immediate wedding (dependant on visa approval, of course!). For those of you who have already gone through this process, what were your waiting times? Thanks!

Hey Averie,

Do not make any plan of travel before your fiancé gets his visa in hand. The Nairobi Embassy has changed so much. When I had my interview I only had to wait for two days to get my visa in hand. Nowadays they are doing thing different coz the passport has to be sent to a DHL location or something for him to pick up. Im not sure how long this takes. He might be able to get it before June 1st just don't pay for any ticket until you are sure that he has his visa at hand. Good luck in your interview.

Thank you! You can email the choice of agent request from your spouse's (the beneficiary's) email address. The template format and information on where to email the message to can be found here: http://www.visajourney.com/wiki/index.php/Email_DS-3032_form

Yes, go ahead and email the choice of agent to them now. Your AOS bill should be invoiced and sent to your email soon. Hope this helps!

Thanks, it does and Saylin helped out too! I signed in with my invoice id # and case # to the dept of state consular electronic application center and i got in. It says AOS fees not paid and IV processing fee not available. Does that mean that once I send my choice of agent form via my spouse's email, I can go ahead and pay the AOS fee or ?

Yes, if it shows that you have the option to pay the $230 fee for AOS then pay it as soon as possible. Then gather up all your AOS packet documents and get them sent to NVC as soon as you have paid the AOS fee and printed the barcoded document from the website.

Hi VJ members,

My story goes like this.

I did my interview at Nairobi embassy on 14th Jan 2013 and everything seemed to me fine at the end of the interview, the CO gave me a yellow form when he had ticket others: he mentioned that i send through DHL the following documents:Custody Order for my children and a Single status Letter from the government I came back to Uganda and got them then after sent them from on 29th jan and they confirmed to have received them but said the CO had not passed through yet. After a week I got a call from The embassy that I have been put in AP and it last about 1 week to 90 days and no update up to now its coming to the fourth month and when I check on the DOS website still it says AP.

Has anyone gone through this experience at the same embassy and how long did it take you to get the Visa?

NOTE: I didnt leave my Passport with them, they gave them back to us.

Advice is highly appreciated

Kasoma,

Many people are put in AP at the Nairobi Embassy. The best advice I can give you is to send them an email and ask them for an update on your case. It's not strange that the AP has listed this long, so don't worry about the length of time...it's not unusual. Try emailing them and see what their response is. It's always good to email them every couple weeks ~ it shows you are concerned and still waiting to hear from them. I wish you the best! Stay blessed. ~Jill

I have great news- my fiancé's interview was two days ago and he was approved!

Here is a summary of his interview (I was not there, so this description may not be as detailed as others'):

He arrived at the Embassy at 6:45 for an appointment at 7:15, went through all the security checkpoints, and then waited in the outside area for 2 hours. Finally they called his name and asked him to submit his DS-156, DS-156K, and DS-230. Then they told him to wait again. This time he waited, and waited, and waited for 4 HOURS! During this wait he had a very good viewpoint of what was going on for other applicants in their interviews and many people went ahead of him (one lady was denied a tourist visa to see her friend, but refused to leave the interview window- she proceeded to complain that she had proof of everything needed and that they should give her the visa for half an hour- finally it was granted and she did a dance!). My fiancé and two other K3 applicants were the only ones who had to wait for such a long time. My fiancé could see which interviewers were nice vs. mean and which ones were likely to deny vs. approve so he prayed for the nice woman to call his name. And four hours later, she did!

During the interview, she asked for his passport-sized photos and affidavit of support (which she barely looked at). She was very nice and carried out the interview as if it were a conversation. She asked him if he had met my parents (he hasn't) and if I had met his, when we met for the first time, and went through some of the photographs I had submitted with the I-129F (she returned them to him after). Then she promptly told him, "Everything seems to be in order. Your passport will be available in one-week with the visa. Welcome to your new life!" He said he would have hugged her if there was no glass between them!

Now we hope for him to join me in the US in 2 weeks, get married right away, and start the process for the green card. If anyone has questions about specific parts of the process, I can follow-up with my fiancé. I know this thread on VJ has been very helpful to us and we are very happy to help others!

For those still undergoing the process, all the best of luck. The wait, and paperwork, pays off... Now on to the next challenge!

Hi Kasoma,

Sorry for the late reply. Results after AP can vary...some are denied, some are approved. If you have no red flags and your case is pretty cut and dry, you shouldn't have any issues. I've seen many, many people get approved after being placed on AP. Like I said, if you have no red flags or major issues, you should be OK (just pray hard ~ as with anything...you never know). Nairobi can be unpredictable. Just try to stay positive. I wish you the best!
