DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Syria's state-run television and witnesses say U.S. military helicopters have attacked an area along the country's border with Iraq, causing casualties.

The report quoted unnamed Syrian officials and said the area is near the Syrian border town of Abu Kamal. It gave no other details on Sunday's attack.

Local residents told The Associated Press by telephone that two helicopters carrying U.S. soldiers raided the village of Hwijeh, 10 miles inside Syria's border, killing seven people and wounding five.

The U.S. military in Baghdad had no immediate comment.

More info from Reuters:

The official Syrian news agency SANA said the attack took place in the Bou Kamal border area, in eastern Syria. Bou Kamal is the main crossing point into Iraq from Syria.

Residents said the attack targeted a house in the area in which a man, his four sons and two nearby workers were killed.

From Arutz Sheva:

Two of the helicopters reportedly landed in the village, where eight American soldiers jumped out and carried out the operation. The soldiers quickly returned to the helicopters, and all of the craft left the scene.

It was the first time the U.S. has attacked on Syrian land.

From the Jerusalem Post:

Western defense officials told Channel 10 that US troops were carrying out a military operation against al-Qaida activists in Syria.

From Press TV, Iran:

"Nine people were killed and 14 wounded in the raid, which hit a group of builders while they were working," the private television channel al-Dunia said. "All victims were civilians."

The victims were identified as construction workers with the wounded being transferred to a nearby hospital.

From Antiwar.com:

The attack comes as particularly surprising considering the US was reported earlier this month to be mulling lifting sanctions against Syria in light of their indirect peace talks with Israel. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem had said there was “good progress” in a dialogue aimed at improving US-Syrian relations.

From WorldNetDaily:

Today's operation ... is the first in which American forces so openly attacked militants on Syrian soil, clearly broadening the scope of the U.S. military campaign in Iraq.

The U.S. has long accused Damascus of failing to stop insurgents from crossing from Syria into Iraq, where they purportedly attack coalition troops and return to safety zones inside Syria.

From BBC:

Sana news agency said ... "American soldiers" who had emerged from helicopters "attacked a civilian building under construction and opened fire on workers inside - including the wife of the building guard - leading to [the deaths] of eight civilians".

The dead included a man and his four children and a married couple.

From The New York Times:

The Syrian deputy foreign minister summoned the Charges d’affairs from the United States and Iraqi Embassies in protest, SANA reported.

Was Palin responsible for this? Or was it McCain?

Obviously Bush hates both of them. People are going to want answers and until they get them they are going to be suspicious of not just the current administrationn but anyone who looks like them.

This might just hurt McCain's chances at winning. You watch- check the polls later today and I'll bet you McCain will have lost his lead against Obama.

stupid and terrible...

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

How do you know? Sounds like there isn't enough details to know one way or the other. Learn the facts and then decide. Don't assume the USA is automatically the villian.

Maybe I should ask...why do you assume the USA is the villian? Yes indeed.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
