And I agree. I do not believe the government should encourage or limit patronage either. What the government CAN and SHOULD do is encourage ethical behavior, including funding educated choices without implicitly pinpointing single businesses enacting ridiculously stupid business practices.

That can be taught in education for those in high school and college, like econ/business majors (cough), but I don't see why the government should waste time and money re-educating adults on how to do business when if they want to lose money, they'll discriminate against customers. Likewise, should the government tell you who to have as friends? This doesn't seem like education, it looks far more like social engineering. Society does a good job on it's own dictating what is or isn't acceptable when it comes to simple issues like this.

I agree that the government should have the power to regulate business, but this is more of a social issue. The business part in this case regulates itself because discrimination means less customers, thus less money. I have yet to see a business owner hate money.

I just think the government can reward good business behavior with incentives that encourage better behavior from others. Something progressive of sorts. Not particularly something that would relate with the example of the parking lot, but something a bit larger in scope. Doesn't necessarily require huge investments of money, but actual investments in educating consumers. We spend countless quantities of money in lying about our political opponents so why not say better things with deep impact.

Government can't reward anyone. It has no money. When people say "the government" they're REALLY talking about tax payers. If the tax payers want to encourage ethical behavior, they can do so with the money government allows their to retain for their personal use. Just another argument for lower taxes.
