Oh Laura that's so tough. I know you guys will get through it. If it was me, I probably wouldn't say anything yet. What are new job prospects looking like for him? If you think he'll get a knew job semi-easily, I wouldn't worry yet..

I'm not that familiar with the AOS process yet, so I don't know a lot.

Will his parents help with sponsoring you if need be?

Good luck sweetie, I'm sure it will all work out

woah-chill out! You have to give people a chance to get online, not to mention I'm at work and about to go into a meeting.

I'm sorry to hear that Nick lost his job. Unfortunately you live in a state that has been extremely affected by the credit and mortgage crises. I wouldn't even be thinking about AOS right now. I'd be thinking first and foremost how are you going to pay rent and bills. That is the first thing to tackle. Nick is going to have to take another job as fast as he can, regardless of what industry it is.

As far as AOS goes, I'd think about finding a sponsor. It's no big deal. You said you guys have a lot of friend and family support here right? So see if someone can sponsor you like your father or mother in law.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

no clue on the AOS process. Wish u the best!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thank you.

Chill out? Okay...I'll get right on that. Sorry, like 20 people viewed this and said nothing...I'm upset...can you blame me???

Anyway...

Do I contact the USCIS? We do have people to co-sponsor, that's not a problem and Nick will be looking for work.

We started the AOS because we needed to...I wasn't going to pay extra for EAD and AP and I need to start working and I need to visit home.

We have a lot of money saved up so we aren't too worried about rent and bills right now, also Nick will be getting unemployment until he gets a job...I just don't know how to go about the USCIS AOS aspect of sponsorship.....

Laura and Nick - what a blah thing to happen! Now, these things DO happen and you two will be just fine, two smart people - you will work through this.

I know very little about the sponsorship portion of AOS, i'm sure someone will be along with a wealth of information though, once we have all had our Carla coffee!

I do know that EAD is said to generally take about 90 days - not sure when you sent in your stuff, but that's something to realize, that soon you will be able to work and I believe you have some connections at the store you were working with in Canada?

Anyway, it will work out and as Sapphire asked, is there someone you have for backup sponsorship that you can call on?

Awww sweetie, what a lousy birthday present for Nick! :( Sorry to hear the news. I don't think you need to panic at all. As someone said, your in-laws may be able to sponsor, but firstly, your AOS might be approved automatically without an interview for one, and secondly, I'm sure Nick will be seeking some work shortly, if not you once you get your EAD, and if so, you can bring new documentation to the AOS interview if you get one. I know there has been people that got a new or different job from the time they sent in the AOS, to the interview, and they just brought updated information.

It's easy to feel scared when you can't work, you're worried about being a "burden", and just basically feel helpless. Stick together and share the ups and downs, and you'll be a-okay.

We're here for you when you feel this way. (F)

Wow Laura. I'm so sorry this has happened. Very stressful. It sounds like you may have received some good advice that is making you feel better. I'm sure it will all work itself out, but I know that kind of news would have freaked me out too. Hang in there!

I am so sorry this had to happen to you two. Everything was going so smoothly too.

I agree with everyone else and just find a sponsor, and like Mandy said Nick will have to take any job he can right now. There are jobs out there, you guys will be okay.

Donne moi une poptart!
