Obligatory Russian Forum specific information to keep this thread in RU forum: In post-Soviet Russia, information finds you.

:D

Platy had a similar problem to Mox, except it spilled over into real life. Stuff getting sent to the house and so on.

That's what would annoy me. Someone sending me stuff and just generally harrassing me. I can't really see Russian criminals sending junk mail. At least they'd have the decency to stop by in person.

We also had an ex-internet-friend of Platy's threaten to get someone she knew to come and burn down our house. I reported her to the UK police, "just in case" anything happened. ;)

It never rains, but pours!

How naive must one be to buy into scams like this one, though... Especially after the 2nd letter

It has more to do with "being lonely and needing to find someone" that these people prey on others. Also, with the poor English in the letters, men are likely to be led along thinking that it is just poor English that is making the letter sound interesting. Add to that a general perception that "everyone wants to live in America" and it is easy to see why guys are so easily swayed. The letters almost always have a sad story to convey, like this poor girl lost her father in a car accident at the age of 2 and she still misses him.

Then, add in a couple of very lovely photos of a woman and you have some guy really interested. Especially when he looks at women in his country and can't find one close to such beauty that would talk to him. It's really pretty easy scam, especially given the ease of the internet.

Ok, here is her reply: ( too bad i can't post her picture, she sent me 3 pictures of herself)

Hi my friend !!!

I'm very glad that you have interested in me and I will try not to

disappoint you and you will get everything about me if you wish.

I ask you to write me about everything that you are able to say me.

I will be glad to know about your work and family, your close friends,

And your hobbies too.

I want to tell you that through few weeks I will have a vacation.

And I think to travel to other country. Therefore I want to find the man

in

other country not from Russia.

I would be glad if you could show me your country and your culture etc

if we become good friend or more!...

I had a dream when I was at school to travel a lot.

So now I would like to tell you about myself. I am a Russian girl, I

think that

not differ from others.

I did not hope that you will answer me and when i saw your letter I was

really surprised and now i am sitting in front of computer and do not

know what to write you.

I am sorry if there are a lot of mistakes in my letter because i know

English not very well but however I was a best student in my class when

I was in school.

But I hope that you will understand me and if you have any questions I

will answer them with pleaser.

Anyway it is time to say some words about myself.

My father died, when I was a child. It was an auto accident.

I miss him a lot!!!! Since 2 years old my mother grew and educated me

alone.

It was very difficult for her and I love her very much. And now she is

the best friend for me.

I'm the only child in the family and I don't have any children, but my

dream is to have my own family and children too.

My mother works in Novocheboksarsk in the hospital as a medical sister.

I have never been married before.

I am the healthy woman and I do not smoke but sometime

I can offer myself to drink some good wine in good occasions.

Most of all I like red wine.

From food i like Chinese food and Russian food and I would like to test

European and West food.

I am not exactly that I want to have a child because i think that first

of all I want to find a man who will become my ideal sexual partner and

simply good friend for my heart.

So I work in office as manager in the insurance company, I work 40 hours

In a week.

I work with the clients who want to insure their car or immovable

property.

I help our clients correctly to choose the best ways to insurance.

I know that in your country the system of insurance etc is advanced very

well.

In Russia people just now started to think about insurance,

therefore we have many clients at this time.

In our company we have good boss, we have studied together with her at

University,

but she is older than me for three years. I have good relations with my

boss.

I have high salary for our city. It is about 3-4 $ dollars at one

hour.

I live in the city - Shumerlya. It's small city.

It belongs to Chuvash Republic, about 670 KM or 410 miles from Moscow.

I think that this information will help you to know me better.

I would like to know about your work and City.

I shall send you some picture of my city later.

By the character i am a kind person and trying to enjoy everything in my

life and trying to destroy all difficulties in my life. So, let’s go

further.

My friends say that i am attractive even beautiful young woman.

But unfortunately this fact did not help me to create my own family.

Now i am sick and tired of my loneliness.

I am an open-minded and communicative, but sometimes a little bit shy

girl.

Now i want to find someone who can make all my dreams come true.

In my turn i would be very glad and happy to do the same thing for my

beloved man.

So what do you think about it? By the way, i like sport very much. I am

not a sportsman of coarse.

Just in order to be in good form. I visit the gym three times a week.

I like to swim in the swimming pool.

But to tell the truth, i am afraid of water. But I try to overcome this

fear.

Sometimes, not very often, I love dancing very much.

I can't say that i like a particular type of musik. It depends on my

mood, what type of music i would like to listen to.

But usually i am very busy to have some rest and to do things i love to.

Well, what else? I even don’t know what to tell you more. In such case i

will finish my letter.

I am waiting for your reply!

Good bye, my dear new friend!!!!

If you can please send me your pictures.

I will be glad to get your letter and pictures.

I am sending you my smile to make you feel happy.

Your Elena from Russia.

ps.I email leno4kazzz@gmail.com temporarily does not work.

I ask to write now on my new email eleno4ka@rocketmail.com

it's a typical email (and as someone pointed out, it appears automated). if you ask questions they rarely get answered. if they ask you questions they never spend much time replying on your answers. it's just more ####### over and over, the only thing that will change is the oh i suddenly have feelings for you and the plea for money.

For those that have seen "Birthday Girl", that was a point made in the film. Guys "fall faster and easier" when there is not perfect communication. The fact that the female lead pretended she could not speak English caused the male to grow sympathetic to her situation. The trap was then far more easily set.

Hey, I will admit, my Alla's not so perfect e-mails made her "cuter" and, yes, I'm a sucker for her accent!

Love the Masks Jeffrey! Now we won't see "Mr. Kind eyes" references for awhile. I am certainly looking forward to the November masks as there are haloween masks with the hopefuls available, so are you going to be McCain or Obama? Alla in a Palin mask? We are dying in suspense. As to the topic-I ge these e-mails all the time at work (like AK a govt. worker) I don't even open them even tho I would like to see the "hot" photos. Had some come with photos within the body of the letter, can see the appeal to us lonely older guys. As to the Russian accent, wait until Alla starts speaking more English you will find yourself enthralled. Children will assimilate faster and their accents will be cute, but coming out of the mouth of the woman you love-well all I can say is you will see what a wuss you can be made into.

AKDiver and Slim, you guys crack me up. Who needs the comedy channel when we have this.

I must admit that the accent is enticing and exotic. I told my wife the sound of her voice (when we could only talk on the phone) was intoxicating. So, give the guys looking for someone new and exciting a break. They have had their fill of good old American women and are just looking for something else.

By the way, a friend gave me a copy of "Birthday Girl". I may have been naive at first, but never as bad as the guy in the movie. But, I guess if my life was as boring as his, I just might have done the same thing.

All I can say is it will drive you crazy as well becuase, like children, there will be many things "I not know because I speak Russian language." Ah, what's the language you speak have to do with paying rent?

Sure, there will be funny and cute moments, but there will also be those very trying times when she knows exactly what you're talking about but plays the ignorance card.

(All the more incentive for you to speak Russian. If you understand and speak her language there's almost no way she can pull a fast one on you.)

I really haven't had that problem of "no understand" Julia had pretty good English skills when she came, and has thrown herself into school. I told her she didn't have to work, but she went out and got a part time job through the middle of december while in school. so as harried as she is with studies and work, not too many opportunities to play the nicht verstehen card. But I do hear a litany of complaints about the folks she works with, mostly about back biting. I tried to explain to her that state government work usually attacts the LCD of the working populace. But she does understand why when I come home from work I am not too eager to run out to eat, now the shoe is on the other foot! And staying on topic just deleted an e-mail from Helen. Most of the ####### I see comes with a man's name on the heading.

Thanks! "Mr. Kind Eyes" is walking on the dark side this month! ;)

Well... we probably won't do our holiday tradition for Election Day. We usually stick to the most popular tradition of the month so that would be Thanksgiving. I think I might land in hot water if I put a Palin mask on my Alla. "Jeffery, seems to me you want this woman." She would not like that joke!

Alla's spoken English is not bad already. It's more her spelling that gets her in trouble. Her daughter's English has evolved tremendously in the past two years. I'm thinking her cute accent is going to cause me to lock her up in the shed on weekends from the out of control, hormonally driven, high schoolers! Her young son has almost no accent, what so ever, when he speaks English. I have a feeling he might not ever really have one after a few years.

Hey, I'm man enough to admit, I can be a wuss from time to time when it comes to Alla. But I do have my limits (and Alla tells me where those are!)

I agree he was too naive. Personally, I would have tossed her the first time she started smoking. I could not tolerate that.

Thanks comrades. Yeah, I've been doing the holiday thing since last Christmas. Keep an eye open for our different views to return. ;)

Yes, the spelling can be troublesome, especially concerning the S and C. One thing that has become apparent to me is the type of English most of them learn. It is the British English, not American English. There is quite a difference between these similar languages. Of course, in America we use so much slang that at times you can be speaking to a person from another country that speaks English quite well and they won't understand a word you said.

My stepson had a problem when he first took the written test for drivers permit. One question asked about blocking an intersection and he didn't know that definition of block.

But, overall the experience has been very eye opening for me. I found that phrases I have used most of my life, I had trouble explaining. I'm going to have to find a book on the history of some of these phrases. We had one last night while watching the VP debate. Lena asked, "What does windfall mean?" It took a few minutes for me to think how to explain it too her. In the end a dictionary gave her an answer she understood. "So, it means to pick up fruit blown off a tree?"

The funniest question about slang I ever got from an Eastern European was after overhearing two young men at the next lunch table use the phrase "taking a s#%t". I can't remember the context of the statement (other than thinking - hey! people are eating here), but I could not explain where he was taking it, or why we don't say we are leaving it instead.
