it's their religious freedom to do as such - maybe they can reach a middle ground where whatever concerns (mercury emmissions) can be addressed and limited in some manner.......

Yes it is their relgious belief, but remember they are in a different country to their own and should respect the laws of our land, we do not recognise or accept multiple brides, and many other practices, arranged marriages and the likes.

How much more do people who come to the Uk for a better life, expect us to go in terms of giving everyone what they want???? If they want to give that type of burial why do they not apply to build there own crematoriums where only people of their beliefs can be dealt with. That way there loved ones will not be "contaminated" by the likes of us

Sorry if this offends anyone, i don't normally say much in discussions like this, but after the last few days of the demonstrations I am just a little bit fed up of people who come to this country wanting all their own way with not a though to us. I for one do not want to see funeral pyres in this land, I think that went out with the Vikings!!

arrainged marraiges? the uk does not accept arrainged marraiges? haha. you sound as though your afraid of ferners (foriegners) so i'll refrain from responding to such non-sense.

My sincere apologies there, by "arranged marriages" we mean exactly what Agent smith has stated, where young girls are forced to go to the country of their parents (rmemeber these may be british born girls) and they are forced into a marriage with someone they have not even met in order for that person to gain entry to the UK and then for the rest of his relatives to follow!! major police procedures are under way to find out where hundreds of girls have gone missing!!

And as for not liking foreigners, ignoramous, my son in law is one !! and so are my grandkids, plus my other daughter in law and mynewest grandson, so sunshine, do not go presuming before you know what you are on about!!! (bit like the United nations inour family !!!)

1000 apologies.

Did you bow down and walk backwards as you said that?

Which religion takes their dead to the mountain tops to be pecked at by vultures? They're a bit low on vultures in the UK, I'm afraid, but make up for it in pigeons. Who would I petition for this right, I wonder?

Also how the Parsi of India (followers of Zoroashrianism, religion of pre-Islamic Iran before the spread of Islam converted most and hounded the rest out to the Indian west coast) do it.

What would be really interesting to learn is how in the world did the Sioux and the Parsis of Iran come up with the exact same means of respecting their dead?

"The vultures (nature's scavengers) do their work much more expeditiously than millions of insects would do, if dead bodies were buried in the ground. By this rapid process, putrefaction with all its concomitant evils, is most effectually prevented. According to the Zoroastrian religion, Earth, Fire, and Water are sacred and very useful to mankind, and in order to avoid their pollution by contact with putrefying flesh, the Zoroastrian religion strictly enjoins that the dead bodies should not be buried in the ground, or burnt, or thrown into seas, rivers, etc.

My wifes grandfather passed away last year and was cremated. I was interested so I googled for Thai funeral ceremonies. Found this and laughed in horror.

The corpse is burnt inside the temple in a big and tall chimney. For up-country temples, which do not have a special building with an oven, the corpse is burnt outdoors. That can lead to horrible scenes when the coffin explodes due to the fire and the corpse appears like a living dead. That is why in old days, pregnant women were not allowed to see outdoor cremations. Such a scene could have frightened them and cause problems to the baby.

almaty,

I guess I'm missing something, because I fail to see how taking the ashes to the river Ganges overcomes the problem of the gas-fuelled crematoriums in Britain - the damage is already done, no matter where the ashes are taken, if the problem is where and how the ashes are created.

If it was the body taken to the river Ganges for open-air cremation, then I could see the point of going to the Ganges.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Hindus and Sikhs want the right to stage open-air cremations on funeral pyres so their dead can take an unimpeded path to reincarnation.

"Without these essential last rites, the soul languishes in restless torment," said Davender Ghai of the Anglo-Asian Friendship Society, a charity that is seeking to overturn a 75-year-old ban.

They are offended by the use of gas-powered crematorium furnaces and fearful that the ashes could be inadvertently mixed with others.

...

Ghai said that at present many Hindus and Sikhs "take the ashes to the river Ganges because they think the last rites are not proper here because of gas-fuelled crematoriums.

The theology is that the Ganges "cleanses" everything. Makes the impure, pure.
