They are working, sort of. McCain is running for the title of most absent member of the senate though, with 64% of all votes missed. Obama is managing a somewhat better record, only absent about 45% of all votes.

The problem is votes are done in person. Unless you are only campaigning from DC, its hard to travel and vote in the senate.

And that my friend is called politics...;)

historic move? try stunt. mccain can't help with bailout negotiations, he's admitted repeatedly he doesn't know jackshit about the economy.

He was the co-author of a bill that most likely would have averted this mess back in 2005. The bill called for more stringent control of Freddie and Fannie......killed by a partisan democrat vote........

I think he knows enough about the economy and with the right people around him in the WH, such as possibly Mitt, he would still in the aggregate dwarf Obama in experience.....in all areas of concern (except organizing a community, of course  )....

Bill name please.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

The bill was passed by the senate banking commitee and later killed by the democrats.....

Senator John McCain was one of the three cosponsors of S.190, the bill that would have averted this mess.

Lets look it up.

S.190. Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005. Introduced January 26, 2005.

On June 28, 2005 it was ordered to be reported with an amendment in the nature of a substitute favorably. It died at the end of the session for the 109th Senate Session.

Interestingly...

A similar bill was reintroduced with the amendments in the 110th session of Congress where it remains pending. I unfortunately don't have the Bill #.

Now I wonder... why would the Democrats kill this bill? If Democrats are all for regulation, that is...

Unless, of course, the language of the bill doesn't really properly regulate the 'mess' we were about to get into.

Quite the leap on your part....I defer to the "experts" that describe the bill as one that would've appointed a regulator to oversee Fannie and Freddie and their forays into risky finacial endevours......and those that do know the details of the bill state that the kinds of dealing that finally sunk both of them would be disallowed.......

Well I got my info from thomas.loc.gov as well as govtrack.us

Not exactly people making leaps of logic there. The rest is simple reasoning. Republicans are typically hush-hush when it comes to having 'excess' (*) oversight on Corporate America.

(*) = Usually more than 0.

Probably hopes to have the debates permanently postponed as he's going to come off as a goof during the debate anyway. He supposably told Obama they'd both meet and discuss this whole thing, then after getting off the phone has a news release about going to Washington? What a goof. They don't need him in Washington now, nor in November. ;)

I think Obama had it right here - there's nothing that really requires the specific involvement of the candidates, and its not exactly like either he or McCain are being insulated from what is going on.

Actually, it was reid who insisted that McCain get involved. Well, he is the defacto leader of the GOP now and GOP lawmakers will not want to commit to anything that their leader and presidential nominee will later disagree with. Now that McCain called the bluff of the Dems, they are now saying oh1 we don't need you here.

As for Obama, he IS the leader of the DEM party. But it seems his party eldrers are still not used to including him in their poohbah powwows :)

Yep, kind of hard to get used to answering to a freshman senator with little or no experience.....My guess is that Reid and Pelosi expect to make him their beatch if he's elected.....

Suspending your campaign just doesn't make sense and given that the recent events have negatively affected McCain's poll numbers...if he got Obama to agree that they both suspend their campaigns, and then there is a resolution made by Congress on the financial crisis, he'll come out looking like he helped solve it. While there's nothing wrong with wanting to address the issue, this issue didn't just pop up over night. In fact, up until last week McCain kept on saying the economy was robust. What McCain fails to grasp is that this isn't just a recent problem that requires the Fed Gov't. to now fix, it's a cumulation of problems that laissez-faire disciples like himself created.

I think McCain took a risk... and looks like he may have failed in trying to broadside Obama.

Anywhoo... saying bipartisanship and playing politics with the numbers is nothing new in a Presidential campaign.

This is now a momentous issue for this nation and the world unless it is fixed in a bipartisan and timely manner.

As far as this financial crisis, I have to place the blame on both parties that have played politics with regulation and swapping sides on the issue. Watch this video
