I wouldn't even consider a tax hike without at least a spending freeze, and preferably deep spending cuts.

Yeah a lot of self inflation with salaries from some people. Bottom line is that if you make up to about $111,646 per year, you pay LESS TAXES under Obama's proposal than you do under McCain's.

What percentage of the US population makes up to that amount?

Curiously, from $111,646 up til $603,402, you're still paying less in taxes under Obama's proposal than under current tax rates.

And again, what percentage of the US population falls between those two figures?

The math doesn't lie. Above that you are looking at the top 1.1% of the US population.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden says that paying higher taxes is the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans.

Biden says he and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama want to "take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people."

Under the Democrats' economic plan, people earning more than $250,000 a year would pay more in taxes while those earning less — the vast majority of American taxpayers — would receive a tax cut.

The trouble is, Obama isn't going to give us a tax cut. He will give us a tax rebate. That means that the 40% of workers that pay little or nothing in taxes will get a check. That isn't a tax cut, that is a redistribution of wealth. It will do nothing to solve the deficit problem.

Money that will be spent supporting our economy. ;)

No trouble there. And yes, the tax cut itself can be legislated. As it can also be modified to be more in tune with the times. Otherwise, the current rates set wouldn't need to be revised/renewed/expired to make way for new legislation.

So you like the idea of redistrabution of wealth. And you wonder why the "socialist" label gets thrown around.

i think the most rational thing would be everybody pays the same % of taxes, like x% of their income. Call me crazy, but for me, it makes no sense it isn't that way, unless there is a good reason, like it would be terrible for the economy, i don't see why people should be punished for making more money, it's totally ridiculous and unfair.

Punishment is not getting taxed past a cap of one's income. I fail to see how detrimental it would be for a rich person that didn't need the money to have to pay a pittance on what already makes them financially apical to the rest of the nation... while the absolute majority end up paying more proportionally for cost of living and market items than the rich.

Sure... your idea would work if everybody made somewhere around the same general range of income.

my idea doesn't work because of people that think like you. I'm not rich, and maybe a HH of 15k /year that can only afford the basic, think that we don't need the money we make, so let's just give it to them. like #######?

I think what he's saying is your own government should never be the bad guy. They should always be the good guy.

Though, I would like to see a vote on how many Americans care about what young Australians think.

That was an example idiot.

Why don't you ask your fiancee what people there think of Americans..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I don't get it either.

But I do know that at 15K/year, you can't afford jack squat.

But do read two posts back post #127. That last chart explains some numbers that shouldn't be shocking to read, independent of what "people like me think like."
