Ok I have gone through the tax return and feel really stupid. What number do I use for his income? H&R Block did it different everytime and so not sure what number to use.

we had the same case, in 2007 my husband has two w-2's.

what we did was added the GROSS INCOME indicated in the TWO W-2's for that year and that became the total income for that year.

Well, first that's no exactly correct. Sometimes total income is the same as gross income (by using amount(s) on W-2), but if you had interest, dividends, alimony, unemployment, or a few other types of income, it will not be the same.

You're supposed to use TOTAL INCOME (line 22 on form 1040, line 15 on form 1040A).
