Hello

Sorry I haven't paid much attention to the previous posts, so maybe this has been answered before.

I am soon to have my citizenship interview. I am planning to apply for a US passport. I wonder what documents I need for that and where can I apply? Post office?

Also I read that I need to go to the Social Security and have my status changed from permanent resident to citizen. What docs do I need for that?

Thanks

After the interview you go to the oath ceremony. You will hand in your green card and get a certificate of naturalization . When you apply for a passport, you will need to include this along with your passport application.

Congratulations in advance...

New Application for a U.S. Passport

To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of over 9,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States with two photographs of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification such as a driver's license.

Social Security Card

If your work eligibility has changed or if you have become a U.S. citizen, you must apply for a replacement card. Your replacement card will no longer read “Not Valid for Employment,” but you will retain the same Social Security number.

To get a replacement card:

Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5); and

Show us documents proving your:

Immigration status;

Work eligibility; and

Identity.

Take (or mail) your completed application and documents to your local Social Security office. If you live in the New York City metropolitan area, Las Vegas NV, Orlando FL, or Phoenix AZ you may need to apply in person at your local Social Security Card Center.

All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.

We will mail your number and card as soon as we have all of your information and have verified your documents.

For details about the type of evidence you must provide, see Social Security Numbers For Noncitizens (Publication No. 05-10096) or Documents You Need for a Social Security Card.

I believe you can apply for passport after oath ceramony, if not then yes you can visit post office You will need passport pics (The post office may be able to do them), form DS-11 proof of citizenship (Photocopy of Nat Cert)

http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html

I would bring to SSA what is required for form SS-5 and Nat Cert, the clerk should then update their records, no new card is needed to be issued if you have the one without the "DHS Auth Notation" on it.

MORE here: http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html

After the interview you go to the oath ceremony. You will hand in your green card and get a certificate of naturalization . When you apply for a passport, you will need to include this along with your passport application.
NOTE A Photo copy of the Nat Cert will be fine, DO NOT SEND THE ORIGINAL.

:time:http://www.visajourney.com/timeline/profile.php?id=5739 It would be interesting to see one from visa petition to citizenship.

Wife and I filled out the DS-11 form tonight in anticipation of her oath ceremony next Wednesday, we plan on using our clerk of court in town that is certified by the Department of State. I prefer visiting our local SS office as well, ha, they already know me.

http://www.newcitizen.us/after.html

Is a good site to bookmark when the time comes, her employer will be informed immediately, then the SS, a copy to our governor's immigration officer, then the Department of State. Expect to get all this done in the morning the day after. Then it will be all done.

Didn't say we applied, said we filled out the form in anticipation, also have the SS form filled out, neither is signed yet, but on the basis of my boy scout training, be prepared. Both are useless until we receive the certificate of citizenship. Both forms are neatly typed out, double checked, and printed, just one less thing to do after she receives her certificate.

Had the N-400 all filled out three weeks in advance with all the evidence, but before mailing it, again asked my wife if she sold herself into prostitution, joined the communist party, committed a crime that nobody knows anything about, took a trip out of the country, and those other time sensitive questions they asked.

With her N-445, will only take a couple of seconds to check off NO to those eight questions, sign and date it, we will do that at the oath ceremony, ha, said I will do most of the driving just so she doesn't get a speeding ticket for driving 26 in a 25 until next Wednesday, cops are all over the place.

At Lucy's interview, they gave her a special DS-11 and an envelope for the passport application. She could have filled this out and brought it to the oath ceremony to apply for a passport on the day of the oath. The outside of the envelope even listed and pictured the documents required (The application, photos, naturalization certificate, and a check for the fees).

The DS-11 they gave her at the interview was slightly different in the way they certified that you had sworn all the information on it was true and correct. For a standard DS-11, you raise your hand in front of the person who is accepting your application, and say that the information is true. The person taking the application signs and says you swore it was true. But if you turn the DS-11 in at the oath ceremony, everybody at the oath ceremony swears in unison that their passport applications are true, and the DS-11 says something like "sworn at the oath ceremony".

I may have some of the precise details wrong, but the point is, the passport application is slightly different. You can't use a downloaded DS-11 at the oath ceremony, nor can you take the DS-11 they gave you at the interview and use it at a regular passport acceptance facility. They were adamant about this point. We had a downloaded DS-11 prepared, but they wouldn't take it at the oath ceremony, so Lucy went to the local courthouse the next day to apply for a passport.

Some offices may handle this slightly differently, as well. I'm not sure if all offices even let you apply for your passport at the oath ceremony. If not, you can always apply at any regular passport acceptance facility, any time after you've got your naturalization certificate in hand.

We just went through the process last week.

You do need to update your status with social security. We submitted last week and already received a new card, same number but doesn't have the extra comments on the card about work auth.

You can fill out the passport application and take to the post office (check with the office for passport hours). You will need a state issued ID (license), two passport pictures and you will need to submit your naturalization certificate (original) with the application so I would make copies before you go. Plus of course your checkbook.

Um...you're entitled to go to social security and get a card that doesn't have the "valid with DHS work authorization" comment the moment you get your PR card. We did. My wife's card looks just like my card. So why would we need to go to the social security office after she becomes a citizen?

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

At the ceremony, they told all the new citizens that SS needed to be updated. SS reps were at the stadium to process this on-site.

What if my immigration status or citizenship changed?

If your immigration status changed or you became a U.S. citizen, you should tell Social Security so your records can be updated. To get your immigration status or citizenship corrected, you need to show documents that prove your new status or citizenship. Only certain documents can be accepted as proof of citizenship for new and replacement cards. These include your U.S. passport, a Certificate of Naturalization or a Certificate of Citizenship. If you are not a U.S. citizen, Social Security will ask to see your current immigration documents.

Because it's free and the office is only a half a block out of my way!!!! Since I had my wife's last application saved with Adobe Arcrobat, had to change legal alien permitted to work to USC, and the date of the application, then hit print.

Interesting post by lucyrich on different DS-11 applications, but think we will pass on that as well as would have to submit the certificate of cizenship with it, and have other things I want to do first with it like getting drunk after that long battle with the USCIS, well maybe just a small sip of wine. But wouldn't you have to hand fill out that application? Like everything to be neat and legible, plus have a copy handy so later I can look at all the mistakes I made, LOL.

It's not free - it takes time and energy. Even so, what good is it if it doesn't DO anything for you? Pissing on a fence can be free too, but that doesn't mean it's something that you should do just because it's free.
