for DS-230, you need to submit all originals (civil documents), only the geographic page of the passport would be photocopied. dont worry, everything will be returned to you when you ask for them at the embassy. just ask them for your originals and then the people from the USEM will make copies of it and return the original documents to you, this is a standard procedure when the beneficiary asks for the docs back.

Original Birthcerti, Original Polic Certi. and Original Marriage certi for DS-230. Please don't send them Certified/Notarized copies from India, that might delay your NVC process by getting RFE. Almost everyone VJers got their Original back after interview. That's just my opinion. Hope this helps and good luck.

Question: I read from NVC website (i believe, but I can't remember exactly where), that the birth, marriage, police cert's DON'T need to be translated, as long as they are in the official language of the country where the interview is going to be in. Any thoughts/experiences with this one?!?!

Thanks!

Certified copies from the entity that issued original document are allowed. So, if you go to same entity that issue your original birth certificate and get certified copy from them, it's allowed to be submitted to NVC. However, photocopies that are notarized ARE NOT ALLOWED.

Lindsay,

I am 99.99% sure that NVC WILL NOT accept documents that are in original language of that country. If in original language, then they will have to be translated to English. The problem is that if they are in original language, then NVC can't tell what the document is....i.e. whether it's birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree...And if NVC can't tell, then NVC can't determine if the application is complete. So they have to be translated in English if in original language.

The Title of the topic is the one of the oldest question of VJ. :)

My opinion is to send originals because what will you do, if you can't get the approval with certified copies and NVC delays your case? then your original will become good for nothing, i think we all got done this paper work for immigrant visa.

Another advice is that get certified copies for your record and keep them safe with you while sending the originals to NVC. This way even if NVC loses originals, you can take certified copies to your interview and show them to CO. Plus, having certified copies will enable you to get new originals issued from any govt. entity in case your originals get lost by NVC.

However, I have a interesting dilemma about sending Certified Copies. I have a certfied copy of marriage certificate, but it's not computerized ...all the info is hand-written. So the hand-writting in original and certified copy is different...it's same information but since it's hand-written they don't look similar like it would if it was computer-generated forms..... I am still debating whether to send certified copy or original.... :D

I'm also in the same situation. I'm going through both paths K-3 AND/OR cr-1, hoping for the immigrant visa. However, I plan to take which ever one comes first - meaning if my Hubby gets his interview date for the K-3 before the immigrant visa, then we will go through the K-3 VISA. With that in mind, I also don't want to send ORIGINAL copy of the required documents with DS-230. Please advise!!!:unsure::unsure:

According to this page on the Department of State's official website on NVC processing:

CERTIFIED VS. ORIGINAL?

Either one is acceptable.

"The applicant and each family member who will accompany the applicant to the United States will need to submit the following original documents or certified copies of the documents listed in this section from an appropriate authority (the issuing entity). In addition to sending the original documents or certified copies of the documents to the NVC, the applicant and each accompanying family member must submit a photocopy of the original documents or certified copies of the documents."

Actually I'm glad I read this, as I wasn't aware that I had to submit a photocopy of each document in addition the original/certified copy. *runs off to the photocopier*

TRANSLATIONS REQUIRED?

No, Lindsay was right.

"All documents not in English, or in the official language of the country in which application for a visa is being made, must be accompanied by certified translations."

Now for my personal opinion...this may be what the website says, but I've seen people gets RFE's to request original documents as well as translations. Granted I don't know the exact circumstances surrounding each of these instances, but I don't want to risk my case being delayed for any reason. I will be submitting only original documents and keeping the certified ones for myself until I can get the originals back at the interview. While it doesn't apply to me, if any of my documents were not in English, I would be translating them just to be sure. Arguing the validity of an RFE with the NVC would take just as much if not more time than cooperating with it, so just play it safe the first time and avoid the whole possibility.
