Now, if the higher indian caste were to have a 'rat eating' day to promote the popularity of rat meat and show us just how 'superior' rat meat eating could be, then I might view this suggestion with a little bit more charity.

That was basically the content of my deleted post, but I was unable to say it quite that politely.

Bihar is known for its caste-based politics. There is no way there's not a caste angle to this story.

That's what I was wondering.

The thinking behind it seems to be "You're hungry? Eat rat. After all that's all you deserve anyway".

Bihar is fvcked up. There is a joke in India, if Pakistan wants Kashmir they can have it - on the condition that they take Bihar off India's hands as well.

My family used to have a lot of property in Bihar, some generations ago. It was really nice once upon a time. Some of the greatest thinkers of India have come from there, from the Buddha himself to many leaders of the Indian freedom movement.

But today it's a cesspool. A criminal and corrupt cesspool where the educated have all pretty much left and all that's left is caste-conscious garbage, voting for politicians along narrow caste lines.

Actually the higher caste in Bihar won't eat any meat, forget about rat meat. At least most of the Biharis I know, let it be of any caste, they stay away from meat.

Speaking of castes... is that really how beef became a big no-no for most of Indian society except the higher castes, of course. Just curious since I remember a college prof theorizing about how the upper castes turned a shortage of cattle into a religious observation.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

The higher castes don't eat beef. Except in some parts of India, they don't eat meat and/or fish at all.

Beef is primarily a Muslim food item in India.

I think there are even caste issues amongst the indian community in Britain. Though there I think its less about politics and more about what shops will deign to sell to you if you're "low class".

I have some opinions about the type of Indians who immigrated to the UK, but I will keep them to myself.

Let's just say the US got the pick of the crop.

Of course, I knew that. I meant along historical lines.

When I do got o India it won't be difficult since I am off beef for the next couple of months. But chicken and fish... that's all good.

And don't forget the vegetarian food in India. It's kickass.

I could be wrong but I think we have more Pakistanis and Bangladeshi's than Indians - mainly concentrated in cluster areas in the big cities. I'm sure many of them still maintain close ties with their home countries, so I've wonder how those different groups interacts given their political and religious differences.

To an outsider its something of a closed community.

Which confirms their superiority because not eating meat and still having a good diet is expensive. Well, it can be.

Its not expensive in India, non-veg food is more expensive compared to veg. Though the place I live in, sea food is cheaper than vegetables and fruits, but thats another story, I live in a non-existing island for most Indians.

I don't know, I have some wonderful friends in the UK who are of Indian decent and yes, their command of the vegetarian kitchen is indeed kickass!

Splendid governess. Shall we have another cup of tea..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
